When you have a cold or flu you can get dehydrated more easily then normal. It also helps to thin the mucus so it gets out of your body as opposed to hanging around and clogging your sinuses and lungs. Contrary to popular belief, pneumonia is an infection, not just a mucus build-up in your lungs. People often develop it after a cold or flu.

You really should drink "plenty of fluids" whether you are sick or not. Your body needs water to function properly. Dehydration can cause digestive problems, gout, kidney stones and many other illnesses.
