I understand that Christians believe we have been decieved by Satan, so please dont just post comments about God loving us etc. I already understand that. What I was wondering is how many people have misconceptions about Wicca as a religion, I mean do any of you have any other reason for thinking it is evil other than it being a 'false religion'? Does anyone still think its about sacrifice etc etc?

Thanks in advance for any serious answers!

Proofread, I like your answer. I'm sure theres loads of people that have bizarre beliefs that are more to do with the drug taking LOL. But Wicca would never involve animal sacrifices, we dont want to harm anything!!!! I personally dont do drugs but I'm sure some do, just as some Christians do and some Muslims do.... I wont go into the sex, coz that depends on the person again. Although most Wiccans do believe sex (between two consenting adults) is a beautiful thing... but no-one is saying dont be responsible with it!!!!

That thing about your ex sounds scary, I dont think I'd have got a good impression of any religions that use the Pentangram after that experience!

I admit I don't know a lot about wicca, so you are getting an answer based on the hype that is out there about your religion. From what I heard it is an earth religion with some good basic values. I have never heard of any type of wiccan sacrifice! I have heard of different rituals but none that involve sacrifice or any type of harm. In fact, I always thought that wicca's main focus was to live without harming anyone or anything.

Good question,
And Rocky road, I do reconize jesusu as the son of God, that does not decide your religion.

I am wiccan, and actually most christians don't realize, but wicca is the OLDEST religion that is still practiced. It is older than the church, and most church traditions and holidays derive off of pagan rituals.

Badfarret, no wicca pre - dates christianity, most records were destroyed when the roman empire murderd thousands of druids. the "modern conception" of wicca ( ie media prespectives) date to the 1950's, because that's when most of america was deeply regular church goers. Research REALLY hard and you will find it.

If anyone actually has encountered a wiccan that sacrifices, they are not wiccan.

THE WICCAN REDE

Bide the Wiccan laws we must
in perfect love and perfect trust
Live and Let live,
Fairly take and fairly give
Cast the Circle thrice about
to keep the evil spirit out.
To bind the spell everytime
let the spell be spoke in rhyme.
Soft of eye and light of touch
speak little, listen much.
Deosil go by the waxing moon,
Chanting out the Witches Rune
Widdershins go by the waning moon
Chanting out the baneful rune.
When the Lady's moon is new
Kiss the hand to her, times two
When the moon rides her peak,
Then your heart's desire seek,
Heed the North wind's mighty gale
Lock the door and drop the sail
When the wind comes from south
Love will kiss thee on the mouth,
When the wind blows from the East,
Expect the new and set the feast
Nine woods in the cauldron go,
Burn them fast and burn them slow
Elder be the Lady's tree,
Burn it not or cursed you'll be
When the wheel begins to turn,
Let the Beltane fires burn
When the Wheel has turned to Yule
Light the log and the Horned One rules
heed ye flower, bush and tree
By the lady blessed be
Where the rippling waters go,
Cast a stone and truth you'll know
When ye have a true need
Harken not of other's greed.
With a fool no season spend
lest you be counted as his friend
Merry Meet and Merry Part
Bright the cheek and warm the heart
Mind the Threefold law you should
three times bad and three times good
When misfortune is enow,
Wear the blue star on thy brow
True in love ever be,
lest thy lover's false to thee
Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill
An ye harm none, do what ye will

Does no one really not know that the ANCIENT druids practiced wicca and other pagan rituals, they date back to ANCIENT romans, if you didn't know, that is QUITE OLD!!!

Of course by using technicality, the WORD wicca was most likely not a word , that's just plain comon sense.
During the time of the druids, there were six different languages, three of them were Gaelic : Irish Gaelic, Manx Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic.
Even the Modern forms of Gaelic spoken today is far from what they spoke in ancient times. During the fall of the roman empire, the roman army advanced into ireland-scottland. They killed families that would not join the romans, burned down entire towns. Murdered an entire culter, so there is no historical documentation about the druids.

Point is, The word wicca, just the word with NO MEANING behind it was created in the earily 1900's, but the beliefs and the practices all the basis of the religion of wicca was the religion in the Druid highlands

You have come to realise there is no absolute evil.
It is entirely subjective.
No one believes their faith is evil. Even Big Nick recons it was all a bit of a misunderstanding and victors justice.

There are many who devoutly follow a different path, that would rabidly be denounced as evil, when viewed from a divergent theological perspective. You only have to look at the pure hate generated by the schisms within the "mainstream" religions, never mind inter-religion antipathy. Do not worry about perception of your faith.

With no centralised orthodoxy in Wicca, how you practise it, can be radically different from how it is practised elsewhere. There are many omissions in Wicca "theology", which I am sure could lead to practises you may consider evil.

Paganism is ancient. Wicca is "branded" paganism, and relatively modern. I reserve judgement. It would be so much more interesting if it was about sacrifice, malice and wrath. Alas, it's not.

I think Wiccans are mostly harmless and nice folk. Yes, they can be flakey but so can folk of any "religion." Are they evil? Hardly. That is tarring with a very large brush.

Most Wiccans would hardly squish a spider, much less sacrifice cats and such. Hollywood aside, Wiccans are not one large organized cult of killing monsters who levitate and get their way with the world. Not that I have seen.

Most evidence now points to Gerald Gardner and Aleister Crowley inventing Wicca in the 1920s-1940s. Gardner claimed to have been in contact with some heriditary witches. No one ever truly came forth. Many of the rituals echo Masonic practices well-established at the time and then bent into OTO and AA.

However, just because a religion is invented, does not make it invalid. Look at Christianity: Saul/Paul invented that out of whole cloth having never met Jesus.

How do I know if my conceptions are misconceptions or not?! I don't know the difference between pagans & Wiccans. I have no problem with the tree-hugger nature lovers prancing about in white robes at Stonehenge, but from the small amount of experience I have (ex lived in a house with black walls & ceilings & pentacle on the floor, & strange druggie people) I'm sure there are some dodgy practices - whether these ever involve animal sacrifice I don't know, or if it's just an excuse to have lots of sex & take drugs, preferably at the same time.

So, don't know, is my answer. I suppose I find it a bit scary, the 'unknown' wrt spells, rituals & incantations, and dabbling in things we don't understand. Have read too much Crowley I suppose, don't want to be found dead with white hair & staring eyes in a locked room! Prefer to stick to Bible study which is my chosen path.

Enlightenment, not darkness.

Tell me where I'm wrong if you like - I'm prepared to have my conceptions labelled as misconceptions!

I am a Wiccan Witch, and it is by no means evil.

To danksprite - It is not centuries old as you said, it was created from many different Pagan paths and also from a lot of Masonic teachings back in the 30's and 40's. Pagan practices are old, but Wicca as it is mostly practiced today, is not.

I don't believe Wicca is evil because it is first a new age belief, which focuses on the spiritual qualities of nature, secondly that Wicca is not an ancient pagan religion.
Wicca was created by the minds of Gerald B. Gardner and Aleister Crowley, who were slightly theatrical in their approach to magic.
The only form of ancient paganism still left intact by Christianity is Odinism, which survived in Iceland up to the 12th century and was preserved in the Viking sagas and poetry, along with the meaning of the Runes and the method of divination.
Druidry does not truly survive because the Druids never wrote down their secrets or knowledge, due to their oral story telling tradition.

I follow Wicca because it's the only religion that doesn't claim to be the one ture religion. It tries to understand other beliefs and doesn't make the practioners feel like their being forced into it. Besides, why follow any religion bent on ruling the world or saying you'll go to hell if you dont believe in it? Anyone who doesn't know about it or anything else for that matter shouldn't talk. They're only showing their ignorance.

I have met many wiccans and the are overall some of the nicest sweetest people you would ever wish to meet. But some extremists would say thats a trick from the devil. But in the bible it speaks about synagogues of satan in the new testament. With most outspoken groups christianity is a very devisive religion by its very nature.

I'm a Christian - but don't worry I;m not going to convert you. Obviously I don't agree with what you believe - just as you probably don't agree with what I believe. However I don't think Wicca is an evil religion. I don't really know much about it to be honest but from what I do know it's about peace and stuff. I guess you just gotta respect everyones religions and personal decisions even if you don't agree - cuz I hate it when people don't rspect mine.
