could be the beginnings of a serious disorder called pica. talk to your pediatrician, or do a google search for more info...you'll be able to tell more by the description of the symptoms....good luck with this...hopefully it's just a quirky little phase he's going through.
**meant to say beginnings of prader-willi syndrome rather than pica...oopsie and sorry**

What's he doing with the food when he steals it? Is he eating it or just hiding it away as his own little stash? If the former, then he's probably just still hungry and worried about food running out? If the latter then, is he having an issue with something of his being taken away from him by the other kids - like his toys? Or its an insecurity thing where he just wants to have something secret hidden away thats just his?

Depends what you do when you catch him stealing the food. It may be for the attention.
Sit down with him and let him know that you know his hungry and let him know that he has to ask you first before he takes food.
At meal times, Allow him to choose from some healthy foods what he would like to eat. And put a little more on his plate.
Also give him some one on one attention. Playing games and drawing pictures. Going for a walk or riding his bike etc

Dont worry about it! If your son is in his right weight, he's probably working out a lot and gets hungry! Kids will usually at only when hungry, so don't worry! Just check his weight often so things don't get out of control :-)

It's NOT pica. Pica is the desire to eat NON food items such as laundry detergent.
However it could be the subtle beginnings of an eating disorder. Children need to learn portion control early on. Please see a pediatrician soon.

Did you adopt him? Maybe he thinks that you will one day stop giving him food. Make sure he knows that no matter what, you will never just stop feeding him. Set him down and tell him that.
