PUT A PIECE OF BREAD IN IT AND SHUT THE LID, IT WILL BE SOFT THE NEXT DAY! The Sugar draws the moisture from the bread and it will get hard but the sugar will be soft! Throw the bread away! Works with Cookies too! I put a peice of bread in with my holiday cookies to keep them as soft as fresh baked, then put the sugar in a zipper bag!

Normally you would put the container into the microwave to soften the brown sugar. But since your container has a metal clasp on it you cant. What you will have to do is fill a large pan with water and set the container down into it. Simmer the water with the cannister in it (don't boil it) until the sugar softens enough around the edge to break it up. Once it is soft enough transfer it into large ziplock bag. Then put it in the microwave on high for 10 seconds at a time until the entire block is soft.
To keep it from getting rock hard in the future always store the sugar in resealable bag then press that down into the decorative cannister.
Hope this Helps!

How do you soften brown sugar that is as hard as concrete? Before it reaches the concrete stage, but when you notice signs of hardening, place an apple slice in the bag and leave it for a couple of days.
After the sugar is hard, you can soften it by placing a cup of sugar in a covered dish in the microwave and heating for 30 seconds or so. You may need to heat it more than once, but watch to see that it doesn’t start to melt. You can also heat the brown sugar on a metal pan in a regular oven at 250°F (120°C) for five minutes or so.
To keep it from hardening in the first place, store it in the freezer

Put a slice of bread on top of the brown sugar and cover it and it will soften up in several hours (this is guaranteed to work), after, keep about 1/2 slice of bread on the brown sugar and it will stay soft. I have heard a slice of apple works also, although, I have never tried it.

put a few drops of water in the jar and wait a little while. Brown sugar absorbs moisture like crazy. That should loosen it up enough so you can get it out. It should always be stored in a very dry place, like an airtight container.

If you just want to get it out of the container to get rid of it, just add some hot water, it will soften the sugar and you'll be able to pour it out with the water. If you want to actually use the sugar, throw in a fresh piece of bread.

You can either wrap it in a ziplock bag and store it that way inside your canister, or you can put a slice of apple in it and it will soften it back up.
They also sell little teddy bear shaped things you can store in with it to keep it moist.
I've found the ziplock is the most effective way of preventing it from happening in the first place.

I would wash it out with hot water . To keep that from happening again , I would suggest using a zip lock bag with no air in it and keepit in a cool place .
