First of all if you want to get a donation from a company, you have to ask the right person. From the response you got at Home Depot I don't think you asked the Store Manager. A regular clerk isn't the person to ask.
When it comes to soliciting donations ,keep in mind that there are many people out there trying to screw the system and aren't above any trickery to get free stuff. I know a guy who has Platinum credit cards and more than $25,000 in the bank yet goes to the local food bank to get free groceries. Consequently, as a result of abuse like the aforementioned, requests for donations are often greeted with suspicion. If on top of that you don't have a visible handicap, it will be assumed more often than not that you're trying to scam.

Yes, accidents do happen, but you can't expect to go to local businesses in this day and age and ask for handouts with the rampant misuse and litigiousness of society. Besides, big chains like Home Depot usually only donate through corporate and not through local stores.

They might also think, that's life, accidents happen. He should have had disability insurance.

There are reputable institutions to help you as well as your local church. Try the Salvation Army and call your local social services offices and ask them which organizations to speak with. Ask a local boy scout troop to do a ramp on your house as a project for a badge.

Do you still work at all or are you relying on free things from others? There are things disabled people can do but choose not to because it will lower their benefits from the state and fed.

They are places you can get assistance...try the dept of rehabilitative services...or your local dept of social services.

There are grants available for things like that.
