Matisse was an incredible artist. A very interesting fact is that he was bedridden for most of his CutOuts phase. He would cut the shapes and direct assistants where he wanted it placed.

Despite being surrounded by an almost constant stream of beautiful women which he drew and painted, naked or scantily dressed, his marriage lasted; unlike Picasso´s many failed marriages. However, reading between the lines (since I have never seen it stated in black and white, except that at this time late 1930s:( Mme Matisse leaves Nice for Paris in mid March 1939 alone) he separated from his wife) he seems to have succumbed to the charms of his model, and studio assistant, Lydia Delectorskaya. He, unusually, I think photographed her; on one occasion posing with charcoal in hand in front of a version of «Large Reclining Nude»: a liberty I don`t recall ever seeing with any other of his models.
Well who knows? Perhaps, it is just my invention triggered by the delectable surname of the model!

for just over the last 10 years of his life he was diagnosed with duodenum cancer and had to stay in a wheelchair. in his last years he was to weak to stand at an easel, and made art by cutting out brightly colored paper shapes and making collages-the closest he came to abstractism, and a perfect demonstration of why he is one of the most celebrated colorists.
he initially studied law, but after an attack of appendicitis, began to paint and 'discovered paradise'.
despite living through one of the periods of greatest technological advancement (including hi-tech (hydrogen) bombs) and political turmoil, there is barely one reference to such an event or even political opinion expressed in his work-his work was a gateway into a kind of paradise world which he tried to inhabit.
Max Weber was his student.

toward the end of his life, he cut out a bunch of shapes in colored paper so he could arrange them and still create art once he was too near death to paint anymore. idk if this is common knowledge or not.
