Forget about "Baptists" how about what the Bible has to say?
The gift of tongues was to be a sign to the JEWS. The Bible also says that tongues shall CEASE (1Cor. 13:8)
Want to be Spirit filled AND scriptural? Go to Galatians chapter 5 and read up on the fruit of the Spirit....NOWHERE does it mention speaking in tongues is a sign of being Spirit filled!
The more you yield yourself to God, the more evident He will be in your life.
Also, the Spirit will ALWAYS Glorify the SON, and in churches that speak in so-called tongues, ALL the attention and glory is given to the Spirit. That's NOT scriptural!

Usually not. From a recent article in USA Today:

A move by Southern Baptists to bar enlistment of missionaries who profess to speak in tongues as they pray is stirring some controversy within the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

Leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention's international missionary branch say their vote in November to ban the private practice of speaking in tongues — which they call "private prayer language" — is in line with Baptist traditions and the beliefs of most Baptists.

Southern Baptist ministers opposed to the new directive include those who say they or other Baptist church members have been taken over during prayer by the Holy Spirit and made to utter words in languages they often do not understand.

No, baptist people do not believe in speaking in tongues. Church of God or Holiness churches are the only ones that I know of who speak in unknown tongues.

I wonder who ever authenticates these "tongues", or if they just accept that this person is actually speaking a language instead of just making up nonsensical sounds.

I think it'd be quite interesting to tape a few of these so called speaking in tongues and let a panel of linguistic experts review the tapes. ;)

i believe this is a loaded question. there are some who do and some who don't. just like anyother faith, you have divivions among them on certain things. if a person reads the BIBLE and leaves the scriptures in their context and interpert the word with the 4 w's and common sense, they will come to the understanding they need.
