i want to start my own religion, how do i go about it?

i wont spoil the surprise but my religion is cool, its got the meaning of life, reasoning behind death and a very nice tithe system for my millions of followers.. how do i make it legitimate and take advantage of those handy tax levis?

yea there are a lot, but mines the best, repent or i will smite you, har har... etc

Do what L. Ron Hubbard did. Create a quasi-legitimate sounding self help book all about alternative healing and finding your inner soul and then box it all up and slap a "religion label" on it. That was, after all, how Scientology was born.

Make sure to pay loyal members 10% commissions (call them "Field Staff Member" commissions" on new recruits they bring in who take a course or get counseling or otherwise contribute monetarily to your "church" so that all members will be encouraged to "sell" your "faith" to the public.

And here's how...! First you need to be a charismatic speaker (an eccentric appearance helps- think beards and cloaks) A few miracles in your name -(curing the sick, raising the dead etc)- not difficult if you get a few cheer-leaders to spread the spin and the rumours!

I'm afraid that will take some time...you will need to get several of your friends to write a book based vaguely on what they think you believe in and they can include several of their own interpretations and beliefs. Then you will have to overthrow another religion, have some people convicted as insane and make it look like they are the bad ones. Then disappear and leave your legacy behind with your friends to promote you...but tell everyone that you will back one day..scare them, make them believe you are the only one..you know like that and then have your friends start meetings everywhere and ask for donations to support the meetings, eventually you can ask for more money through guilt and so on..

First you need a believer base.
Marketing is your answer. Once you have a follower base, then you are legit. You will be a non-profit, so there are rules to learn about political views and tax codes, for which I recommend consulting a tax attorney.

First you believe in your self and then look for people who will believe in you and follow your path. Gradually, by God's grace you carry His message to people and one fine morning you loose your individual identity and become His Messenger. You are not to live to see your religion growing because that is what happened in case of Jesus, Buddha and Judah. Muhammad, of course spread his own faith by sword during his life time in the Arabs.
