You can book tickets in advance, from anywhere to anywhere.
Just go to National Rail Enquiries, the address is
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/index.html
hope this is of some help to you.

It is part of the agreement that all train companies sign up to that you can buy a 'walk up' ticket from any staion to any other station at any station.
I work in a train ticket office in London, just last week I sold a ticket for Coventry to Liverpool, so it is the same everywhere else. The only things you acn't get are some of the 'internet only' tickets etc.

re booking on line - have you tried the Virgin Trains site? They provide the service from London to Birmingham and may be more accommodating over your Visa Electron than trainline.

If you go to the ticket office in your local train station then you can prebook the tickets and pick them up on the day you want to travel.

yes you can go into any travel centre and there is a special queue for passengers who wish to book in advance and travel at a later date and they should they not accept Visa Electron (i know i have it and it can be a pain) then they will definitely accept cash.
