depends upon where your staying and whether or not you will be using your car in NYC.
Long term parking at the airports comes to mind
JFK is $15.00 per day and if you use the air train and the Long Island Railroad manhattan is easy to get to
LGA is $ 30.00 for the first 48 hrs and $ 5.00 per 12 hours thereafter. Take the M-60 bus to 116th st and BWY - Columbia U.- take the subway downtown
You can also park in the private lots by the Staten Island Ferry for & 6.00 per day or the municipal lots for $ 5.50/day - bring a roll of quarters

NYC is a big place. Do you mean Manhattan? If so, "inexpensive" is a relative term. There are dozens & dozens of garages. They tend to have similar rates near each other but rates vary widely by area. The cheapest secure 24 hr. municipal garage in Manhattan is on Delancy & Essex (near an s-way stop) at 1.75 an hour. There are lots of metered spaces & lots for as little as a dollar an hour; but I wouldn't advise leaving a car with out of state plates there overnight. If you are willing to put up with some inconvenience; after about 6 or 7 pm & before 6 am a lot of loading zone spaces open up & you can park all night for nothing. But you have to get up real early to find someplace to stash the car for the day. There are side streets throughout Manhattan that are unmetered where you can park all day & all nite for that matter -- if you can find a space -- but they may have distance, inconvenient location or security problems. All in all having a car in Manhattan is expensive & time consuming.

if your really smart you take public transportation leave your car at home!!!!!!!
many attractions are walkable
waiting times in traffic in cabs adds up
if you can park at your hotel great but better take a bank loan to park in the public garages
no where to park
tickets and towing fees very expensive
and you can get anywhere you have to go by bus and train
very few people in NYC unless they are millionaires own a car
i live 20 min. away in the burbs and take the train to visit my kids in the city
if you find a meter be prepared to feed it every hour and a quarter gets you 15 min. and if it is a 1 hour spot you have to move it after 1 hour even at a meter or it will be towed
and will take you hours to get it back
take my advice do not take your car unless you plan to drive 24 hours a day while your there
not to mention there are virtually no gas stations in Manhattan you will have to drive to one of the outer boroughs to gas up and the traffic is bumper to bumper everywhere

There are long-term parking lots on the West Side that are much less expensive than the lots in midtown.

You could also leave your car in the long-term parking lot at LaGuardia airport, which is the closest airport to Manhattan. This website has links to various parking lots at the airports, and has discount offers:
