How do I get the bums to stop digging in my trash?

they scare me everytime i walk to take my trash out!!!

Take your garbage out during daylight hours and try to leave something really stinky in there for them.

hi ! I am surprised at the question.. maybe you don't know , or don't care but look into the eyes of some of those you call bums they are digging in the trash,probably because they have no job and are finding things others throw away to help make money to take care of their familys, they are poor people and may god help those who are in such a high place as to call others who are less fortunate names. I used to be one of those bums, and I found that digging in trash helped to feed my children and I never hurt anyone in the process,I for one hope that you take time to thank god that you are not in the same place as some of these poor people.your life is not over yet,you may be in the same place some day .hope this helps you see the reason that people do this sort of thing..coinlight65 ..good day

ask them what they are looking for--this could be for personal information to steal banking or other information about you, that would be my biggest concern, so make sure you are not leaving that open for this. on the other hand, they could be needy etc i would be polite and just ask, if you are afraid of them i would have someone with me or think of some way of protection. it's a sad situation but this world is hard for some people and they need things. i went to a goodwill store to see what it was like, i saw things there that cost more than at a regular store, it shocked me. as i was leaving i saw a worker carrying a table out of the back and paid a couple of dollars for which was well worth more than that. i think that is a disgrace. think about what they may need and lay it where they can get it easy and say a little prayer for them. God said to love your neighbors.

you can use a locking trash can and lock and unlock it each time.
then they will know they cannot acces it.
and stop hanging around.
you could get used to the idea and make friends with them so you wouldn't be scared. why are you scared of them?
they are just people; talk to them.
you could separate your trash and put what they want in a different place so they could get it.
engage or disengage.
of course you can move away.
you could only put your trash out on trash day just before the truck comes.
so many options.
but i think you should get to know them a little bit.

Rig a shotgun to the inside of an empty trash can so that when they open it, it fires. They won't mess with you anymore. And put a big sign that warns anyone else and yourself from getting it.

Why provide up them? think of of it as recycling. And in case you ask them nicely, they won't make a multitude. they're lowering the quantity of trash in our overflowing landfills. I had racoons like that.I took a bottle of Cayenne powder ,put like three tblspoons in a quart of water,boiled it and poured it over the trash the night I took it out.That was the last time I had racoons.I'll bet if the bums get it on their hands and rub their eyes they'll be gone too.

It sounds funny, but I know people with padlocks on their trash to prevent this. How odd it is to need a key to take the trash out...

I would wait to take out the trash until garbage day morning- that way it won't be there for them to pick through.

Put dirty diapers on top of your trash. Keep doing this. I did this to a lady who pulled up in a Mercedes every week to rummage though my trash.

Get a pole and tie a box of wine to the top. They will be so preoccupied trying to get the booze they will forget about your garbage. But be careful, like raccoons they can be pretty sneaky!
