Well, its generally not a good idea to drink things that are expiried. HOWEVER, let me tell you why supplement shakes are technically OK to drink. It has to do with food labeling laws.
All vitamins/minerals in food supplements (and drinks) decay at a certain rate. (This is the halflife, etc...). Some vitaminswill degrade quicker than others.
ACCORDING TO THE LAW, at the expiration date, the amount of vitamins/minerals in the shake has to be at that amount or HIGHER. So, when things are well before their expiration date, they actually more MORE than the amount of vitamins/minerals than what is stated on the package.
So, if something is past the expiration date, then the vitamin/mineral/etc content will be BELOW the numbers listed in the "nutritent information" section.
However, slim fast may be using milk or something else in it. Generally, in the hospital setting, if tube feedings or supplement shakes are expired, we throw it out.
You probably should not eat it - but I just wanted to give you some of the law background on supplements.
Regards,
Ryan

The label says "Best if consumed by October __, 2006." That doesn't mean it has spoiled; it just means it has aged to the point where it may not taste quite right. If it's only a month after the "best by" date you should be fine. Anything vacuum-sealed in a can is usually OK for up to three months past the "best by" or expiration date.

Yes, it is sealed and pastuerized, it will be ok to drink, just may not taste as good. The use by date is set long before it goes bad to prevent people from getting sick or suing.

Throw it out because it does contain dairy and that won't keep well. There is an expiration date for that reason.
