A church is not a building. The word correctly refers to the group of people who meet (often in a building) to worship God. At the beginning of the Christian faith, there were no church buildings. People meet in homes, at a market place or cafe, or (in Jerusalem) in one of the porches of the Temple. They would study and worship together there.

The first mention of anything approaching a church building is in Acts 19:9, where the apostle Paul made use of an existing school building to hold daily teaching and worship services for two years in Ephesus.

The first actual church building did not come until during the reign of Constantine, when the ban on the Christian faith was lifted.

There is no commandment anywhere in scripture saying to build a building or to use it as a meeting place for the church. But common sense dictates that having such is meeting place is the easy, cheapest, and most convience way to house a church family.

The church is not the building. It is the people. The building is just an edifice where we go to worship.
