have you contacted you social services office?
they can direct you to programs that can help you with rent every month. I know where I live they have programs that reduce the rent based on the family's income but there is always a long waiting list so it is best to get on that list as soon as possible. So if I were you I would just go back to social services and ask for references.

Well I don't know what your state offers.. for single moms like us in NJ the state has a program called HUD... based primarily on your income.. I completely the HUD course was awarded a certificate, than I found available housing thru.. the state is building new homes in my area, I got preapproved for a mortage, filled out the application, the HUD has received my application, as soon as a house becomes available I will get my own home... now I am just waiting til this comes thru for me...

Too many people like you never consider the consequences of your actions and wind up on the dole. You said that you couldn't locate your children's father, but you didn't say "husband." This is indicitive of the promiscuous behaviour in our society. It's fun while it's happening, but how much fun is it now being a single mother needing so much help? Sorry; I can't help you. You should've kept your legs together. I'm tired of my tax dollars paying for your mistakes.
