My boyfriend has been dropping more then obvious hints about what I should get him for Xmas. Like we were in the car the other day and I said something about how I was still waiting to get his Xmas present and he said "Is that because you're getting me speakers" or he'll say something like "You should get me a new Xbox". He's not subtle at all. But I don't want to get him something that he's a) telling me to get and b) has no symbolism or emotion behind it. It want to get him something that means more then just me purchasing something he wants but can't afford at the time. But I also don't want to get him something he ends up hating because it's not electronics. How can I explain to him the reasoning behind why I want to get him something other then what he keeps asking for?? If this makes any sense at all.

It makes perfect sence. Any gift you get him will be from your heart. That is the gift that is the most precious. You don't need to explain to him anything. If he truly loves you and wants you for YOU in his life and NOT the gifts you can buy for him, he will love and cherrish and be genuinely thankful for anything that comes from you. I know if the tables were turned, he would feel the same way as you do right now. My ex of 4 yrs has never got me a gift for christmas, but I do every yr. We were broke up last year and I bought for him, we are broke up this year and I have bought for him. I love him, and I know that in his heart of hearts he loves me too. He doesn't have to buy me anything for me to be greatful that he is in my life..... He knows that every gift he gets from me is from the heart, pure and true. That is what I care about. Your boyfriend may be laying hints, but if he loves you he will love whatever he gets from YOU. And you don't have to explain anything....... Blessed be and blessed holidays :)

He is a GUY, he MIGHT still appreciate the sentimental gift, but not as much as he would if he got an xbox. lol
If you're not going to get him a gift he is asking for, then next time he says "are you going to get me an xbox?" respond by telling him that you are thinking of getting him something that has a little more MEANING behind it rather than just some materialistic item.
If that's not enough to make him understand, then he's obviously not a very "sentimental" guy and he probably wont ever get it. lol

You are thinking about a gift from the heart, which is what most females do. He on the other hand is thinking like a kid. He wants a "toy" and nothing is going to compare to that. If you don't really want to get him what he wants, your right in thinking he probably won't like it, he's not in the same mind set as you are. I would just get the big kid a gift certificate to a good electronics store and be done with it. Why stress yourself over this.

You haven't said how long you've been bf/gf, however, it's incredibly insensitive to try and decide what someone should get you. It's probably because he can't afford them either.
Get him something small and meaningful as you want, and then also get him a book of etiquette that includes a section on giving and receiving gifts.
Best of luck. If I were you, I wouldn't expect much from him.....

I'd get him the speakers but then talk to him about it afterwards. Explain to him why you ALMOST didnt get them for him, he'll understand, and then next Christmas you'll be all set.
If you get him an Xbox, you'll never see him again! ; )

i think he's just teasing you... i'm sure he wouldn't expect you to spend as much money as buying him a set of speakers and an xbox..
from not knowing your bf.. in my opinion he's just teasing..
maybe you should tease him back.. and say yeah.. and you can get me a nice trip to cancun..
