What does this mean? I think I saw it on a sign in front of a church the other day and for the life of me I can't wrap my mind around this metaphor. Is it even a mataphor? Maybe it was just a sign in front of a fence repair shop. I saw it on a road trip and I couldn't see what it was in front of. If you understant what this means please explain it to me. Thanks.

"Mending fences" means working out differences with your opponent or at least deciding where you will agree to disagree. "Sitting on a fence" means not taking a position on an issue. Perhaps it means you can't negotiate if no one knows what you stand for. It seems to suggest that you can't make peace unless you have a strong opinion. I think this proverb looks cuter than it is and doesn't stand up to close inspection.

Let me give it a shot... to "sit on a fence" is to metahorically not take one side or another and of course, to "mend fences" means to work out differences. So in effect the sign is saying "we cant work out differences if you wont admit there are any"

to sit on the fence is to do nothing at all and one must make a decision to do or not to do something if one is to accomplish anything.

Sitting on the fence means being undecided. It means you can't
accomplish any thine if you are not committed.

You can't fix "anything" if your just setting there (ie: not doing anything about it).....does that make sense to you?
