I'm almost 17 and have my provisional driving license. I'm not really bothered if I can drive a car or not. I probably won't use a car much at all as I prefer walking. Anyway, my parents want to get me a small car of my own to practice in and for when I have a licence but want me to put £1000 towards it. I can afford this but it's an insane amount of money for all that a car would benefit me.

Thoughts?

Both my parents drive but I can't use their cars are they're either too expensive to insure or too powerful. The "cheapest" car they can find is almost £3k. I'm not going to pay £1k for the car. I'll just wait till a cheaper one comes along.

If the cheapest car they can find is £3000 they're either looking in the wrong place or want a decent car for you. If you're not fussed about cars a grand is a lot to ask you to put forward to something you don't want. Just remember though, if you knock back your parents offer it will be cast up everytime time you want a lift somewhere.

My parents forced me to get my driver's license. I didn't think I would really need it, just like you. But, now I really am thankful that I did learn to drive and can't imagine being without a car. It gives you independence and freedom.

On buying the car...well, depends on how much your parents are kicking in. Are you paying for 100% of the car? Can you use their car to learn in? If you can, I suggest you wait until you have your license. If your parents don't have a car for you to learn on, and they are willing to pay for a good portion of the car...take them up on their offer.

Then say thanks Mum and Dad, I appreciate the gesture but don't want to drive just yet.

I will wait until I feel that I would get some benefit from owning a car, as I prefer making my way around without one.

My Daughters just coming up to 17 and how I would like to hear those words!!!

The decision is yours. If you do not think that you would use the car and would prefer not to drive then it would be a waste of their money and yours and they would probably thank you for being honest with them and telling them so. Perhaps they could put you on their insurance instead. If they want to spend money on you then come up with a suitable alternative such as a holiday or get them to invest it so they can use it at a later date as a deposit for your first house.

I'd be inclined to go for my test if I were you - a full licence may come in handy for employment etc. You don't have to buy a car to practice in, put the money towards proper lessons in an instructor's car, which at least will be up to date and in good nick.

Once you've got your licence, then you may want to look for a car if it suits you to do so.

Good luck!

do either of your parents drive ?

My mother did the same to me when i was your age , nagging me into getting a car , but her motive was rooted in the fact that she didn't drive and thought i would run her everywhere !!

Your 17 and you sound wise enough to know your own mind and if you were honest with your self , based on the way in which you posed your question , don't really want to have the car.

So don't and feel good about saving the planet just a bit.
Cheers.. :-)

Its a good idea, but surley you could pick up a small car for cheaper than that?
I had a panda to learn to drive in that only cost me 500 pounds, its true once you have your licence your set for life, you can go anywhere any time, its worth doing, tell them, you like their idea but need to shop around for a cheaper car, that way it makes you look responsible in their eyes:):):):):)

Driving is a good think to be able to do as you will realise has you get older. it gives you independence and also you may need one for whatever work you do. Dont forget you can not learn to drive your car unless you have a qualified driver with you. can you not use your parents car to learn in.

Pass your test first, then think about a car if you want one. £1000`s too much for a 1st car. You only want to spend about £500.

Save your money and use your dad's car to practice in. When you pass your test you can decide then whether it's worth the money including tax, insurance, running costs etc.
