I've got a smaller hand crank meat grinder. The kind that clamps onto a table, not the kind that bolts on. I also have a 1/3 HP electric motor from a dishwasher. It's label says it does 3450 rpms. I know that a small pulley wheel is needed on the shaft of the motor and a larger pulley wheel is needed on the grinder with a belt connecting the two. I just wondered what diameter wheels are needed for the best rpm's to operate the grinder. Also was wondering what would be the best surface to mount the two things. A piece of plywood, a 2 x 12, some 3/16 steel plate, or something else.

The motor also has a black, yellow and white wire. I take it the black is hot and white is neutral.

For your pulleys you need to turn the grinder by hand at the rate you want and count how many revolutions you turn in one minute then divide 3450 by this number to give you the turn down ratio (the ratio between the sizes of the 2 pulleys).

The mounting is going to be best determined by the mounting of the motor you have. Use the cheapest, easiest, that is strong enough to do the job.

Not sure about the motor wires, maybe the motor is dual speed, hence the yellow wire but it could be a start winding or wire that should be connected to a capacitor. You will need to get advise from someone that can look at it or be extremely careful in tests. Unless you know the motor is good, there is no point proceeding.

Either way it seems like alot of work, have you considered looking on EBay for an electric grinder?

I have been down this road. I only completed the project because I had so much respect for the man who asked me to do it.

If it were my own, I would have got out my check book and bought a new one.

But if you must.............

You asked about RPM. Only you can answer this. Hand grind some meat and have someone time you for one minute and count the revolutions.

Now that you have the RPM. Get a copy of the Engineering handbook. They are everywhere. Ask an Engineer or a Maintenance man at work. They will easily be able to calculate the pulley sizes need for this machine.

As for materials. Wood, especially plywood is the worst choice possible. Remember there will be liquid blood spilling. Wood is too absorbant. It will soak up the "funk" and could well turn into a health hazard.

Use UHMW Plastic or Stainless Steel if possible. An old counter-top would be an acceptable compromise.

Good luck. it is an easy project that is incredibly time consuming. Ask a youngster to help. At least you can be teaching a kid something while doing this.

save yourself a lot of trouble ...find yourself a 90 degree gearbox that you can mount an electic motor on the face...buy two sprockets and matching chain from a supply house ...go to local welding or machine shop and get uhmw to mount ....i have one made like this and it is well worth the time and effort ..it will run all day
