Explore your negative thoughts. They are there for a reason. They are probably just a reflection of your fears and your programming all throughout your life. The truth is, a lot of our thinking is irrational and untrue. There is no point in entertaining the thoughts that are negative if they are irrational and untrue! If you do, they will cause you unnessary pain, but most of us continue thinking them anyway, because we haven't really taken a good LOOK at them. When you have a negative thought, write it down. Ask yourself, Is this thought really true and valid? And then, write down all the reasons it is irrational. Writing it down solidifes it more in your brain. This is all a matter of re-training your brain. Once you've written all of this down, then, replace it with a similar, but more accurate and positive description of what's really going on. EXAMPLE: Neg. thought: No one likes me at work. Is this true? Well, I have no way of knowing this for sure. There is no evidence supporting this thought. Infact, someone did smile at me the other day, and we had a nice chat. THIS would be evidence to the contrary. NEW pos. thought: I will try to put more effort into developing positive friendships at work. If you need to, you can make this new statement a daily affirmation for yourself, to further solidify this in your brain.

Keep cleaning out your subconscious garbage can! Its good for you...:)

Honestly, I try to find something positive to think about instead. I would hate to butcher the quotation from Charles Swindall that my mother hung on my bed when I was younger, but I will attempt to paraphrase anyhow: Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. If someone at a bar knocks over your beer you can be upset that you lost half a beer or you can smile and enjoy the half of beer you have left and realize it's only a beer and really not that important. There are very few truly important things in life, the rest is "small stuff".

I think it's the wrong approach to insist on ALWAYS being positive, ALWAYS being happy. I just accept that there are times when things just aren't going very well and I'm not very happy, that it's natural for life to be that way, and I know that it's temporary, so it doesn't bother me very much when I have those down spells. The wonderful thing about life is that everything changes all of the time...

I keep my thoughts positive for the sake of my four kids. Believe me it gets hard some days but I just think what their world would be like without me and it keeps me going strong. If you do not have kids, I suggest talking to a good friend and I know this is going to sound nuts, but my friend has a horse that I spend alot of time talking to. It has helped me. Good luck!

If you are having persistent negative thoughts that are affecting your quality of life and your ability to function normally, then you need to talk to a good psychologist. He or she will be able to teach you things like cognitive behavioural therapy, which helps retrain your brain (a very simple way of putting an extremely effective treatment).
I am currently battling post-natal psychosis, and CBT and relaxation exercises are proving to be fantastic tools in helping me get my life back together.
I wish you all the best of luck,
Donna :)

Prayer always helps me. If you KNOW you're thinking negative things, turn it into something positive...
Worse case scenario: Someone close to you passes away, you're sad, but you know they're in a better place no longer suffering, so you can be happy for that.

Depends what you are upset about. Just remember that if you keep your hopes up and high and pray for what you want and how you want it to go ..it WILL go that way if your believe in God. So just remember that something good will definitely come out of your negative thoughts.

As soon as you realize you are having a negative thought, replace it with a positive thought.
