my os is xp four partiton on the hard disk .xp is on c.i want to install linux as a second os and to boot?

I feel it works best if you install Linux first on any partition then XP next. Linux does a great job of setting up the boot screen where you can select which OS to boot. I have not done it in a while so I am sure of the exact terms.
