"Imagine all the people, living life in peace. You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us, and the world will live as one."
I think that John Lennon is telling us here that religion is only serving to seperate us and keep us apart, and is the primary cause of hatred and evil in the world. It's not the love of money that is at the root of all evil, but rather religions themselves are at the root of all the evil in the world. If you think about it, you will see that I am right. Just imagine what a different world this would be without religious wars and conflict. How many people have been killed, persecuted, and entire races wiped out because of religion. Hitler was religious, and he truly believed that killing the Jews was the best thing for society. Wake up people. It's time to face the truth. Everything that you have been taught by whatever religion you belong to has been a lie. It's time to wake up and smell the coffee.

Wow, I never really thought of it that much that way, but it makes sense.

I love the song and admire Lennon for writing it, but I don't believe religion is the root of all evil. I'm not religious, but I think the real problem is people who think they have the right to tell others what to think and how to live. I have no problem with people believing whatever they want to, but I do have a problem when they start insisting that I believe as they do. If all the religious people in the world would keep their faiths as a personal matter and not try to impose them on everyone else, there would be far less conflict.

May we be guided by reason and compassion toward a better, more tolerant future.

Certainly religion is just another in a string of meaningless differences that serve only to keep us apart, facilitating hatred and war. But I wouldn't say it's the root of all evil. If you listen to the song, it definitely places at least equal importance on possessions and countries as sources of division amongst people.

YDoncha - I have heard this song played on a lot of different station in this country and never have the lyrics been changed.

otherwise - I never liked the song. It sounds pretty but i don't like the message. Communism might be for some but certainly it has had its fair share of wars, persecution and ethnic cleansing too. I'm for freedom of religion and not from religion.

I am not at all fond of religion either. I think that the root of their evil is their religious books. Those books were written by men with an agenda. It is in them that they find justification for killing and spreading hate.

Why can't we believe in a God, if you want to, and just treat others like we want to be treated? Teach our children right from wrong. Base our laws on common sense and the desire not to hurt anyone else.

John was a man before his time and I truly miss him. Tragic that he was killed at the happiest time of his whole life.

i comprehend his rationale yet, as he anticipated, I do certainly say he's a dreamer. there is real darkness interior the middle of mankind, and faith/possessions/governments....all those issues....they do no longer look to be the reason. they are the symptom. there heavily isn't a utopia, no longer in this existence. the terrific we are able to do is do good as quickly as we comprehend the crossroads...and attempt in actual fact to locate the effects of our movements on the bigger finished of society. despite if quite everyone have been to continuously behave in a morally sound way, the inherent chaos interior the international does no longer care. Storms, earthquakes, famine, affliction...those issues will continually proceed to reason suffering. John Lennon replaced right into a sturdy guy and a prodigious songwriter/poet, yet there are various from whom we are able to learn. i think of Jiddu Krishnamurti's philosophies will take you on a a techniques deeper journey than Lennon's.

Did you know that whenever this song is played on AMerican radio stations, that line "And no religion too." is either removed entirely from the song, or it is changed to "And ONE religion too." ????? Do you beleive that crap?? We've taken an iconic song from one of the best bands EVER and ruined it, changing the songwriter's original message - for no reason other than to promote Christianity.

God - I hate your followers. They destroy anything they can get their grubby little hands on.

possessions yes.....religion....set of beliefs? I think we all have faith and adore something about life or we are not living. Religion does not have to be focused on hatred. Eternal Damnation Worship is the source of the hate he was talking about. He had a point there.

What you are describing is very real. And it's been proven over and over again. It is called communism. John Lennon was a communist sympathizer who claimed that his song "Imagine" was virtually a communist manifesto.

I can understand "no religion" but "no possessions"?
That would not work. We are productive entities who are motivated by things like creating wealth for himself which in turn best serves humanity.
Religion and socialism = death to humanity.
