There are lots of old wives tales to stop snoring. Your best option is to buy her some earplugs for Christmas! ;o)

I used to work Head & Neck surgery and have encountered many patients with your problem. There are ways to stop snoring but they depend on the cause of the snoring and there are causes other than soft palate tissue collapse. Breathe-Rite nose strips have been helpful for some although this isn't what they were designed to do. I suggest you see your health care provider about it who may want to refer you to an ENT. In the meantime, your girlfriend can use ear plugs -- the wax ones mold to the shape of the ear -- because sleep deprivation has its own adverse effects.

FYI: Someone suggested you sleep on your side. That's all well and good but during sleep you will change positions many times so this is only a very temporary solution.

Good for you for being prepared to do something about it.

My boyfriend is a terrible snorer. He went to the doctor and has a prescription for a nasal spray (steroidal) to help strengthen his throat muscles. He also uses a herbal throat spray that we get from Boots without a prescription. I also buy foam ear plugs (get them from DIY places not the chemist as they are cheaper and the same thing) and wear those every night. Between the three things I manage to avoid killing him in the middle of the night, but he still disturbs me a lot.

He has now gone to the dentist and they are making him a made to measure mouth-guard thing that is specifically to stop snoring. It stops the lower jaw falling back and the throat closing. It was quite expensive but is supposed to work in 95% of cases. It'll be delivered in one week's time so fingers crossed!

Things that help slightly: sleep on your side. Have at least 2 pillows. don't drink alcohol before sleeping.

Snooring is caused mainly by the soft pallet on the roof of your mouth relaxing when you sleep. If you sleep on your back, it's loose enough to sag over the area where you nasal passage meets your mouth and will flop around when you breathe through your nose. Try -
1) Sleeping on your side
2) Nasal strips
3) Rhynoplasty - widen you nasal passages medically

All the usual vices worsen snoring: alcohol, smoking, overeating, under exercising, caffeine. What did you expect?! Many of us snore especially loudly when we sleep on our back. Various pillows and strap-on devices are available to get you unsupine. Some people have had success with natural remedies available in health food stores and over the Net.

The first thing you need to do is see your doc to rule out sleep apnea. Once you have ruled out sleep apnea as a reason for your snoring then the doc can suggest things to help you.

Get fit. People who are physically fit are much less likely to snore, also those who improve their fitness reduce their chances of snoring.
