I have a 1999 Nissan Maxima SE and recently it has made these high pitched whistling/whining noises when I accelerate on the highway. It is coming from the engine because I had my mechanic check the exhaust for any kinds of gaps or breaks. I have heard that it could be a number of things (alternator, vacuum, etc). Just wondering if anyone has a better idea. The car does not make the noise when idling, only when it is being driven.

check the tranny fluid. park on a flat spot and make sure it is up normal operating temperature. apply the emergency brake and shift the car into neutral. there will be a dip-stick similar to the engine oil dip-stick. refer to the owner's manual to see what the level should be.

Crikey, whoever said timing belt, forget it! Timing belts don't whine, they either work silently or they just break, and if that happens, you won't be going anywhere, so relax.

Depends what the noise is like. Does it do it more on cold, damp mornings? If so, it could be the auxilary belts, these are not toothed like the timing belt and can slip. They normally can be adjusted by undoing the alternator bolts and shifting it forward, then retightening. Normally a half hour job at worst.

If it's a mechanical screech, then it could be the clutch, does it still pull properly? Put your handbrake on and try and pull away. If your clutch is dead it'll screech like mad and not go anywhere fast.

If it's a vacuum leak, it'll normally affect the performance, does it feel sluggish? Not idle properly? Look for a hole or split rubber somwhere around the intake pipework, that could be the culprit.

That is a simple question. I am an auto mechanic and i get this problem a lot with the older Nissan's. all you need to do is take your car to a auto shop or if you can do it yourself change the timing belt and re tune it. (if you do take the car to an auto mechanic tell them you want a new timing belt and that's it. They will try to trick you into changing a lot of other parts but that's just to make extra money. that is the only thing wrong with the car. no matter what they tell you do not change anything else)

some maxima's have motorized motor mounts that modify depending using situation if one is worn this is going to reason a buzz or whine at the same time as accerating yet im prepared to guess its the alternator or the loafer pulley causing you noise

More than likely it is gonna be the timing belt, but it is also possible it could be a vaccum leak.
