I think you are meaning Master Sergeant and First Sergeant as having the same rank in the Marine Corps. They have the same rank. If you would like to find out more about the Marine Corps, search, then request from, the> Marine Corps Institute

The SM of the Marine Corps, or the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy, or any of its various equivalents, are extremely hard to accomplish. They are one of a kind, and as such are the most senior ranking person in their respective branch of service. The SMOMC serves for a 4 year duty, the most recent one being in 2011. Since its creation in the 1950's, there have only been 17 of them. The Current SMOMC, Michael Barret, has been in the service for over 30 years and is an extremely well decorated Marine. If you want to get there, you simply put have to be the absolute best throughout your entire time in the Corps, and be in the Corps for a very long period of time. You have to be chosen by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, who is the senior-most Officer in the Marines.

Master Gunnery Sergeant

A Master Gunnery Sargeant and a Sargeant Major, in the Marine Corp, are both E-9s.

Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) is the ninth and highest enlisted rank (along with the grade-equivalent ranks of Sergeant Major and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps) in the U.S. Marine Corps. Master Gunnery Sergeants are staff non-commissioned officers (SNCOs), and are assigned a pay grade of E-9.

Master Gunnery Sergeants are sometimes referred to by the nickname "Master Guns" or "Master Gunny." These nicknames are unacceptable in formal or ceremonial situations, and, at the rank holder's discretion, may also be unacceptable for use by lower-ranking Marines.

In the United States Marine Corps, Sergeant Major is the ninth and highest enlisted rank, just above First Sergeant, and equal in grade to Master Gunnery Sergeant, although the two have different reponsibilities. Sergeant Major is both a rank and a military "billet". Marine Corps Sergeants Major serve as the senior enlisted Marine in the Corps' units of battalion, squadron or higher echelon, to assist the unit's commander and to handle matters of discipline and morale among the enlisted Marines.

A Sergeant Major (SgtMaj) performs more of an administrative role. He is the senior enlisted man in any unit (there is also the SgtMaj of the Marine Corps, a special e-9 designation, he is the senior SgtMaj of all the Sergeants Major, although he gets paid the same, he is in a position of authority over them all), and isin charge of personell training and welfare.

A Master Gunnery Sergeant (MGySgt) fills more of a technical role, and will be in charge of a technical department or division. While he will also be filling an administrative role, it will be in a more technical type role. For instance, had I stayed in long enough, I would have promoted to avionics chief, and I would have been in charge of an avionics division in an aviation unit. As a Master Gunnery Sergeant, I would have been the division Chief at a larger unit, such as an Air Group or Air Wing support squadron.

As far as authority, they are equal. And may God have mercy on the soul for the one that pisses of the Sergeant Major or Master Guns. Pray that your soul belongs to Jesus, because your *** belongs to him.

Usually a master gun is in a non-administrative posting, while sar-maj is an administrative post. Usually a sar-maj was a "top-kick" (first sarg) and the master gun stayed in his MOS and was a mas-sar. The duties my master gun did was basically running our platoon and kicking *** when he needed to. My Battalion sar-maj did the same, but for a lot more ppl. Overall, sar-maj is considered a higher posting (my master gun dealt with a platoon, and the sar maj dealt with the battalion) while our company had a first sar.
