I have a friend who is an architect and he always has a pen in his pocket to draw or make notes. I'd suggest a high quality pen -- Office Depot has a selection and I'm sure other office supply and stationery stores have them as well.

If you know someone else at his firm, you could ask them his preference...

Im currently studying in the architecture field and from my thoughts he'd probably like a desk, or maybe a kit with different architectural drawing tools. Plus, it depends on how much u wanna spend and how old he is.
