why does an apple become waxy on the outside after it has sat around for a week?

Most apples are already covered in food grade wax when you buy them. The waxy appearance just becomes more pronounced because as the apple sits, the moisture in it begins to evaporate and the flesh of the apple begins to slowly break down causing it to shrink a bit.
