There is a lot of mental illness in my family. My paternal grandpa was an alcoholic, had dementia and died from Alzheimers. Two of his sisters, as well as his parents, all suffered from mental illness and killed themselves at different times. Sometimes I worry for my dad, who is 50 now. What are things I can do to reduce getting Alzheimers or dementia? I'm 18 now.

No one knows for sure exactly what causes this isease. My father passed away two years ago from pneumonia while suffering from Alzheimers (a 7 year ordeal for him). Suggestions I have heard include keeping your mind active by reading and doing crossword puzzles, avoiding canned soft drinks etc... Below is the link to the Alzheimers Association. They give a few ideas that might be helpful.

Do intellectual games like crosswords or Sudoku. This has been proven to keep pathways in the brain connected properly. Alcohol and drug use can increase the odds you'll get these diseases too. Also, mention your family history to your doctor as it's possible they may have been suffering from a disorder or disease that can be treated.

I've heard that they are doing research on Tumeric, the spice. The people in India use this in a lot of their food (I hope I have the right spice name here). That culture has no incidences of Alzheimers and that spice is very prevalent in their food.
