I just came back from Bangkok. I stayed at The Emerald Hotel on Ratchadapisek Road near Sutthisan and it was about 173 baht plus 50 baht airport taxi charge so, I just gave the guy 250 baht for his trouble. It's not so bad from Suvarnabhumi Airport, the total time is about the same or shorter depending on the time you arrive.
Just go down one flight and go to the taxi stand and they will set you up with a taxi. Just make sure he trips the meter. I would guess that your taxi fee would be around 180-190 baht. And you might have to ante up for a toll fee of 30 baht. My driver did not on the way out but, the guy asked on the way back to the airport.
Forget about those limos or sedans, they are charging like 700-1000 baht per trip.
Just keep in mind there are 3 areas for immigration checking, go to the furthest away if you have to find a short line. The baggage claim is like 20 carousels large so it is pretty big. I got stuck in a line for 40 minutes. Then after I got through it I realized there was another area. Oh well.
Oh yeah, they have a new booth for visas upon arrival. If you are an American you don't have to stop there. Just keep walking.
Have a good trip.

I think that in perfect conditions (like when there are no traffic jams, like at midnight) it should be about Baht 210 for the meter, Baht 50 for the airport charge. You'd also need to add Baht 25 if you went on the tollway to avoid the traffic jams during the day. The meter charge would be a bit more than this if you did the trip in the daytime. The way I get Baht 210 is that I sometimes get a taxi from Victory Monument to the airport in the evening and its normally about Baht 180, although I get the driver to use the tollway so I avoid paying for sitting in a traffic jam. Victory Monument is about half a mile from Samran Place Hotel (which is on Petchaburi Road), so add Baht30 to that and you get Baht210. Good luck staying at Samran Place, its pretty basic but there is a good local evening food market around the corner on Petchaburi Soi 10 - go out the hotel entrance and turn left - the market's down the first soi you come to.

All the above answers are pretty much spot on regarding the cost.
My contribution to this question is for you not to worry too much the cost as it is relatively minimal - even with you having to pay extra for the toll way. I have never paid more that 200 baht travelling ANYWHERE in Bangkok -even from the airport. You just have to tell the driver to put on the meter (taxi operating from the airport should do anyway.)

Thai Airport taxis charge a 50 Baht fee for their service, then there is a 35 Baht flag fall which means that the meter will not begin till after that flag fall distance, Its generally about 2 kilometers. Generally the taxis expect the customer to pay the toll fee which is 30 Baht. So by the toll gate your up to about 115 Baht. From there it would be about 30 minutes to your hotel so I'd hazard a rough guess at about 200 to 250 Baht for the trip. That equates to under $10 USD...not bad for an airconditioned ride of around 40 minutes. I live in Thailand in Samuthsakorn Province and from my home to the Chao Praya river market near to Wat Arun is around 50 minutes by taxi and the most it has cost me is 280 Baht.

you ought to move out from Gate No 3 of the airport and also you'll discover the ordinary public Taxi Stand. Cab will charge you as in preserving with meter. this is going to likely be round 250 baht + 50 baht to Ecotel motel.
