last night on the news there was an article about a new generation of mixed breeding, i saw something called a labradoodle, part labrador retriever, and part french poodle. needless to say i was disgusted. if you live in indianapolis and were watching fox 59 news at 10 you probably saw this article. what do you think of this. i think it's an abomination

Better define genetically altering! Most people think of it as some laboratory modification of genes, NOT what this question seems to be asking about -crossing two breeds in an attempt to combine the desired traits of each breed (which unfortunately for some breeders is lots of $$ for pups) Technically selection of only dogs showing desired traits is genetic altering - so ALL dogs(and all domestic animals & plants) are genetically altered by that defination!

I hear these people breeding these "mutts" are charging upwards of $1200!!!! NO WAY would I ever consider paying that kind of money for a dog that doesn't even have papers.

I saw a book at Petsmart that is all about the new "designer breeds". I am entirely disgusted that they would allow promotion of such a thing, since they are so good with doing rescue adoption days. They do adoption days, but promote the idea of mixed breeding by offering this book.

Funny how you bring this up since my girlfriend raises Labs and just bought herself a standard poodle stud to do exactly what your speaking of. I dont know how I feel about this..in some ways they are taking away from our purebred dogs. The only way this will work for them is the people that will pay for it. If people wont pay they wont do it. Alot of people dont want the shedding and so this is their perfect option. I have heard these called Designer Dogs and there are magazines out on this now. These dogs can be registered through CKC. I know some do this with Pembroke Welsh Corgi as well. Maybe one day it will become a recognizable breed through AKC but I wont do it w/my corgis.

Genetically altered? This is simply breeding two different breeds together, coming out with a mutt and slapping a catchy name on it to sell to all the morons out there that think they are getting a purebred dog. This is not genetically altering anything, I think your confused

there is nothign wrong with cross-breeds...they are great and have less health issues...but what i dont agree with is people trying to capitalise on it...they are not purebread dogs they are cross breeds and untill they are recognised as a new breed they should be priced as such
