Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was born in Italy in 1452.
*On 15th April, Saturday, around 10.30pm ("at three o’clock in the night" in Renaissance time), Leonardo is born in Vinci out of wedlock to Caterina, a farmer’s daughter, and Ser Piero da Vinci, a notary (1427-1504). Recorded by Leonardo’s paternal grandfather, Antonio di Ser Piero da Vinci.*
He was an polymath: architect, anatomist, sculptor, engineer, inventor, mathematician, musician, and painter.
*He was a polymath so I'd just use either this term or the list.*
He has been described as the archetype of the "Renaissance man".
*Your source as anything in quotation marks requires one unless it is a title or another language etc*
He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time.
Leonardo is famous for his realistic paintings, such as the “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper”, as well as for drawings such as the “Vitruvian Man”.
*The realism of these works is not why Leonardo is famous. The Mona Lisa portrait and the Last Supper Fresco are examples of Leonardo's 'moti mentali', motions of the mind of of the soul. The Mona Lisa is also an example of hid sfumato technique. The Vitruvian Man is an example of Humanism.
The earliest known dated work of Leonardo's is a drawing of the “View on river on Arno from Montalbano Valdarno”, drawn on 5 August 1473.
*The inscription on this drawing, written in Leonardo’s characteristic mirror-writing reads “(feast) of Saint Mary of the Snow/ -day of August 5th, 1473” and indicates that this is Leonardo’s earliest surviving drawing, drawn when the artist was just 21 years old. Referred to as the first landscape in western art it can be found in the Uffizi, Florence.*
From 1513 to 1516, he lived in Rome, where painters like Raphael and Michelangelo were active at the time.
*Certainly all three masters were in Rome during this period.*
In 1516, begin working towards king france “Francisk I”.
*On 17th March, Giuliano de’ Medici dies. Leonardo writes “The Medici made me and destroyed me.” Leonardo is left without a patron.
The sixty-four year old Leonardo goes to France. He is invited as paintre du Roy by King Francis I. He is accompanied by his friend Francesco Melzi and servant Salaì.
The pension from the king for the “master Leonardo da Vinci, Italian painter”, amounts to 2,000 ecus soleil for two years. “Francesco Melzi, Italian nobleman”, receives 800 ecus for two years, and Salaì, “servant of master Leonardo da Vinci”, 100 ecus.*
He given to use of the manor house Clos Lucé, next to the king's residence at the royal Chateau Amboise, where he spent the last three years of his life.
*Leonardo doesn't go to Clos Luce until 1518. Until 16th January, Leonardo remains in Romorantin working on the plans for the palace and related canals. Clos Luce is near to rather than next to Amboise Chateau. I was there in October and its a good five to ten minutes walk away outside the castle walls.
On 19th June, in celebration of the wedding of Lorenzo de’ Medici and Maddalena de la Tour d’Auvergne, niece of King Francis I, Bernardo Bellincioni’s Festa del Paradiso (“The Feast of Paradise”), originally staged by Leonardo in 1490, is performed in Cloux with mechanical scenery.
On 24th June, Leonardo writes that he has left Romorantin to go to the castle of Cloux at Amboise. *
Leonardo died at Clos Lucé in France in 1519.
*On 23rd April, Leonardo aged 67 goes before the Royal Court at Amboise to acknowledge his will.
On the 2nd May, Leonardo dies in the Castle of Cloux. Following his wish, he is buried in the cloister of the church of Saint-Florentin at Amboise, now destroyed.*
