We just got Dakota (a 7yr old collie) about 4 days ago from my brother, who got it from another guy, a few days earlier..... Anyway my brother had no idea what he was feeding him, he has bad teeth and he wouldn't eat dry food so I started him on pedigree canned food, now he is sick with diahreia. I am wondering if he will adjust to the new food, if so about how long does it take?

Be sure to get a fecal done it may be worms.

It usually takes about a week to adjust but canned is a bad choice. If he can not eat hard mix it wil the canned. Or soak it in water like a puppy and gradually make it harder.

It should only take a few days or up to a week. But you said that the dog has diahrria, this could be because you are feeding the dog just canned food. If you can try calling the guy that your brother bought the dog from and ask him what he was feeding him. This way you will not have to deal with a sick dog all week.
If that does not work, try mixing a dry dog food (of course soak the food first, since your dog has bad teeth), and mix it in with the canned food. If they sell canned and dry food for sensitive stomachs, I would try that as well.
If you cannot get a hold of the guy that originally had the dog and none of these methods work after a week, I would consult the vet. He may have some advice on what to feed your new dog that will not make him sick all the time. Do not wait longer than a week, because you do not want your dog to get worse and there is something internally that may be causing the problem.

Canned food is mostly water. It takes about a week to adjust a dogs diet. If the dog was on dry but, has trouble eating it I would just wet the dry food. Slowly change the diet so you don't cause stomach upset. At this point however, if the dog already has diarrhea. I would start it on boiled chicken and rice then slowly mix a quality dry food to it until the dog is solely on the dry food that has been soaked with water.

It takes about a week for a dog to adjust to new food, however canned dog food usually does give them diarrhea. I would suggest mixing the canned dog food with dry dog food and slowly (little bit at a time) take the canned dog food out. As far as the bad breath goes you can try the greenies dog treats. They really do help. Good luck,.

First of all take him to a vet and get him checked out. Your dog maybe can't crunch the dry food because his teeth hurt to much to eat it. Your vet will want to look at fixing his teeth and suggest an alternative canned food that is better for him and easier on your dog's digestion so you don't have diahrrea problems.

since you should have gradually given him the new food by mixing it in with the food he was eating, the adjustment period is usually two weeks or so. it sounds to me like you just keep switching his food so he probably doesn't have a very sensitive digestive system and can handle all the different brands. as long as he has solid stools, he should already be adjusted to his food.

Some dogs get diarrhea when they eat wet dog food. If his teeth aren't too bad, you could try mixing it with some dry food and that should harden up his bowel movements. There is a wet dog food my Bichon loves that has chunks of meat and vegetables in it, its called Beneful and they come in little plastic dishes. --Good luck

Friendly Hello,

I would recommend a better brand of canine dog food. Go with something like Neutro for sensitive stomachs. Lamb rice formally always. Right now you need to go the extra mile with your new family member. I would recommend frying up hamberger and boiling rice and giving this to him for his diet to help him out. This is most likely what your vet would recommend. Good luck

Blessings,

usually just a 3 - 5 days. Food should be changed gradually mixing a small amount of new with the existing and increasing the amount of new and lessening the old over a weeks time to avoid the problems you have. We operate a family owned puppy store. You can see us at ItsJustPuppyLove.com
