I would like something near all the shopping, Times Square and Central Park, but everything costs upwards into 300 a night or more. I could handle a little inconvience for a lot less a night. I want to be somewhere nice though...not in a dump or bad part of town. I'm not that familiar with NY.

Hi! I've been running into the exact same problem for a trip I've been planning to NYC in March. There is a GREAT website that helped me find some really reasonable bed, and breakfasts that can run as low as $70/night. Go to www.tripadvisor.com, and search New York. Then you will get a list of hotels and bed/breakfasts in NYC. The best part is that each of the places are rated by people who have actually stayed there and you can read comments about the hotels/b&bs. I'm sure you'll find something in the area you want and with the right price! Good luck!

there's a hotel a friend of mine has stayed in somewhere off of Delancy, technically it was in Chinatown...it was cheap, (like 140 per night), check citysearch...also post the question on craigslist NY.

good luck

Have you tried Expedia? You can always stay on Long Island and travel to the city by train. That would be less expensive.

Depends on where in the hamptons you are going. If you are going to Hampton bays (where all the good bars/clubs are) try alan acres. Not the nicest place but there it is close to everything and not expensive.

there isn't, anything in new york is going to be outrageous. you would end up paying more than $500 a month for a one bed room apartment in a crappy neighborhood.
