That's a pretty confrontational thing to do. IF I were a smoker, and I was smoking outside on the street instead of inside, and someone walked up to me and said that, I'd be inclined to react violently. I'd try to control that inclination, but it would be pretty hard to do.

You know I quit smoking several months ago, and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. I will tell you though, I never ever smoked in a restaurant because I always felt it was rude. Even if there was a smoking section. Let's face it the smoke sort of just wafts throught the restaurant. I like to say having a smoking section is a bit like having a peeing section in the pool. Anyway, I always made it a point to go outside and smoke. So I guess if I had made an effort to be polite and go outside to have a cigarette and you made it a point to get all up in my face about it I would find it extremely rude and confrontational.

I'd tell you how silly you are worrying about that in Manhattan. You're walking the street, breathing in the exhaust from buses, trucks and cars, which are MUCH worse for you than the cigarette smoke. Then you are going into sealed buildings with recirculated air, awash in the germs of a few thousand people. Most of all, you're probably also risking your health by saying that to the wrong person.

RUDE! Maybe he thinks you smell like sh i t. Maybe you have BO or bad breath. Ever think of that? Since when are you so great and perfect.
Smoking is a bad habit, and a smelly one. But, until a law is passed that says smokers can't smoke in PUBLIC, you have no right to act so immaturely and rudely. This is a free country. If you don't like the smoke, just walk away and be done with it. No reason to make a comment or a scene, unless you are that insecure that you need the attention.

Very rude! I'm sick of people looking down on smoking. Why are we the ones that have to walk outside to smoke! Why don't the non smokers leave! Now being outside isn't good enough! What are we supposed to do!

When i smoke, in this age, I try to stay away from people(I do this anyway) Otherwise I'd tell the whining sob to smell their own as# for all I care. Why not tell ugly people to wear a paper bag under your premise? Why not require cars off the road because of emissions? How far do you take it?

Hmm, let's see, you spent time and energy to walk over to them and insult them -- when you could have just as easily spent less time and energy to walk the other way, AWAY from the smoke. If you find smoke really annoying, why do you head towards it when you smell it? When you could just as easily head away from it?
Sounds like the problem is with YOU, not with the smokers...:)

when on the street i dont think you should be so rude with smokers. if they are in your home then you should say no smoking please. when in a non-smoking area you can point to the sign and sy please put it out. but on the street you should be more polite. im a smoker and i would respond better if i was talked to more politely. thank you.

Considering you were walking on the street- you really can't complain about much- when people fart or have really bad body odor- do you tell them they smell like sh**.
If it had been me you said that to, I would have told you it was your upper lip.

I would think that you couldn't control yourself! There are no laws about not smoking on NY City streets. Keep your comments to yourself
