Let me give you a very simple analogy for this... there is a bus with a sitting capacity of 36, imagine 100 or more people in it. What will happen to it??? Break down of course. Likewise when there is population boom it causes HUGE pressure on the resources. While the resources cannot expand, population can.

The Island of Haiti offers a good example.
In response to the consumer demand for charcoal as a fuel for cooking, too many trees in Haiti were cut down. There were not enough trees to meet the demand of the population in a sustainable manner.
The consequence was severe erosion of the land, especially on mountainous slopes. A heavy tropical storm in 2004 which was relatively inconsequential to neighboring islands turned out to be a disaster for the island nation.

The nature can healthily support only so much of any species. It has built in mechanisms that keep the population of any species under desirable levels. When the population of a species crosses equilibrium the quality of the species goes down.
Humans beings, milleniums ago decided to overturn this natural balance with their brain power, when they started to settle in far off places. They needed a lot of people to fill their emerging 'civilisations' --- much more than nature devised for. They built several mechanisms to encourage/ force people to reproduce. Eversince, human societies have been obssessed with reproduction. The marriage institution was developed not to institutionalise male-female romance (as is assumed today), but in order to boost reproduction.
In the middle ages, Religion came into being (with Christianity, et al.) and they sought to control the earth through numbers. The religions developed their own mechanisms to make people reproduce more and more. E.g. in Hinduism men and women must marry and produce a son if they want to go to heaven. Christianity and Islam came down heavily on non-reproductive sex, especially on same-sex bonds which were a great threat to the institution of marriage.
With the beginning of the modern era, religion started to lose power and science took its place. That science too is obssessed with reproduction is clear from the fact that modern biology is based on Darwinism which considers reproduction to be the sole purpose of life, and considers any creature or biological activity that does not add to reproduction as an 'abnormality', 'disease' and a 'burden'. In fact it seeks to explain every male/ female biological aspect in terms of reproduction. E.g., if the peacock has a gorgeous tail, it is there so that it can attract females to reproduce. Many biologists are disputing Darwinism now.
The crux of the matter is that human societies have been unduly obssessed with reproduction, which has today resulted in a huge human population which has driven other animal and plant life towards extinction. Not only that, modern science strives to provide luxurious living to as many individuals as possible, and this can only come through more and more industrialisation. Industrialisation is another name for the destruction of fragile environment. The air we breathe, the water we drink, the food we eat, everything is poisoned by the industries which give us luxury items to use. But nobody seems to really care. Who will turn back industrialisation? But where is all this leading to?

i would assume that it means the population is increasing, ie when families have children they grow up and must move off and find their own land and resources. so there is a constant need for new places; for new resources to support the new families.
humans have expanded over much of the world for this reason.
but sometimes space runs out. people fight wars to get new territory. when people are hungry and their children are hungry, they will choose to chop down a rain forest to solve the problem. i would, too.

Ask how much can it increase and we can treat every body good. if things get short and u don't have enough gasoline to take the wife to the hospital things get bad. We need to developer all sources of energy so they will be available.
