Quitting smoking is a great opportunity to learn about ourselves.
Congratulate yourself on having the desire to stop - then you are over the worst, but still need to maintain your resolve. It's just so easy to start thinking that just one won't hurt, but it does. Just one achieves nothing except feeling the need for another. Whatever you do, don't have just one. Beware - alcohol will weaken your resolve.
Here's a few home-brewed tips that might be useful.
It's not just nicotine addiction - there are 50+ chemicals in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something', which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!
We will have a few bouts of feeling or even being short tempered. We must try to bite our lip, and control; ourselves. Recognise the short temper as being the removal of toxins which are trying to find a way out. They went in through the mouth, and they try to get out that way to. We must learn to keep our mouth closed, and force the toxins out the other way.
After we have stopped for a while we will begin to feel that just one wont to any harm.
All that leads to is a desire for just another one. We must guard very strongly against the desire to have just one.

TO whom it may concern; I started smoking when I was just Nine years old...
Of all the things I use to do SMOKING was something that totally had control over me, meaning that I did not have the will power to stop smoking , or in other words ,I would try but the urge would be there, and if I could get a hold of of something to smoke it was all over !!!
Un till I was in a position where I was detained in the Cook county Jail for trafic violetions ,and there was no smoking allowed, let me tell you ,"I went thru the symtoms most people get ... like itchy throat the cough and most of all your Nerves. "
But let me tell you the best way is to go "COLD_TURKEY ! " and it would help a whole lot if you get away from any one that smokes ,or even to see some smoking for at least three weeks ,and then you would be able to fight the CRAVINGS,especialy after you just had your Lunch or Dinner !
Remember the most part of it all is "WILL_POWER....

You have started smoking about 1 1/2 years back and asking as to who to quit? That shows how weak you are mentally and psychologically.
You need self-confidence which you are presently lacking. Try to build up your self-confidence first and you will automatically quite smoking or can do anything you wish.
Good luck.

First of all, take any cigarettes in your possession and destroy them right now! Smash them, burn them, tell them you hate them. Secondly, remove all traces of smoking from your living environment. Ashtrays, lighters, etc. Thirdly, clean and disinfect your living area. Open the windows- enjoy the fresh air. Lastly, find a substitute- for me it was red licorice strings. Even if you gain some weight it is still better than what smoking cigarettes are doing to your body. When you get an urge to smoke, take a walk, have a glass or wine, or do something positive for yourself. YOU CAN DO IT! BE STRONG! Peace and good luck.

There are lots of forms of methods on kicking the habit. These methods are as simple as regular gum or a complex as a new drug on the market that has just been approved by the FDA. It's called Chantix. Do research and go see your physician for help. Nicotine is an addiction. It's a very real addiction. Take quitting seriously!!

Ok, advising you to just quit is ridiculous, depending on your addiction level. I have smoked for 16 years, trying 5 times to quit already and I have failed. I get violently ill when I quit and I become pretty torn between urges to commit homicide and suicide. LOL I have been successful twice replacing with the patch, or replacing with candy/gum and avoiding cigarettes and smoke completely. I fell off the wagon due to being around other people smoking.
However, I will advise you to talk to your doctor if you have any trouble with just quitting cold turkey, or if you are a heavy smoker, as it is good advice, as their may be support in your area or aids to help. If you have had depression and anxiety issues, please talk to your doctor, as they may be able to help you with both things at once with medication.

resolve not to smoke on a given day. dont smoke that day. the next day put a cigarette in your mouth a number of times, BUT dont light them, let them come out all soggy. Then, the third day avoid your friend smokers completely, avoid smoking company. and stay at home and bite on chewing gum. consequent day you have forgotten what a cigarette looks like.Celebrate by Not drinking liqour, that day, and instead gorge on Mithai. By the time all this is done you are on 6th day. There you have forgotten how to smoke.

“If you have your first cigarette of the day within five minutes of waking, your addiction is pretty strong. If it’s within 30 minutes, it’s moderate and, if it’s within 60 minutes or later, it’s somewhat lower,” says Cheryl Yates, a master certified tobacco treatment specialist at The Tobacco-Free Wellness Center at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center in Pennsylvania. The only and sure way is just quitting. Do not befriend another culprit like tobacco chewing for leaving old culprit smoking. It has never worked. Cultivate and pursue some hobby which you love and your mind shall be diverted from smoking.
