I live in an apartment and that happened to me before also; and I noticed that sealing the flour in a container or even a plastic bag resolves this problem. Those little black bugs love dry goods, so what ever it is, peas, rice, flour, cornmeal, etc. Just seal or wrap it up tightly. The bugs will disappear because they have nothing to thrive on.

They are called wheat weevils.......

A weevil is a beetle from the Curculionoidea superfamily. There are over 60,000 species in several families, mostly in the family Curculionidae (the true weevils).

They are usually small, less than 6 mm (¼ inch), and herbivorous. Due to the shape of their heads, weevils are commonly known as snout beetles.

Weevils are destructive to crops. The grain or wheat weevil (Sitophilus granarius) damages stored grain. The boll weevil (Anthonomus grandis) attacks cotton crops. It lays its eggs inside unripe cotton bolls, and the young weevils eat their way out. The Zyzzyva weevil is a genus of tropical American weevil.

Some other beetles are wrongly called "weevils", like the biscuit weevils (Stegobium paniceum) (Anobiidae) that were previously known for eating the biscuits on board ships. Weevils are most likely to be observed in a domestic setting when opening a bag of flour although they will happily infest most types of grain including oats, barley and breakfast cereals. If ingested, E. coli and other various diseases can be contracted from weevils, depending on their diet.

They are called flour weevils and they hatch when flour is stored too long at room temperature. If you keep flour for long periods of time it is best to put it in the freezer.

They are bole weevils. The weevils lay there eggs in the flour before it is harvested. If the flour is not refridgerated, and the temperature and humidity are just right, the eggs will hatch.

I bet they are cereal beetles. Well the first thing to do is get in your cupboards and do a cleanout of cereal, flour, crackers, noodles and macaroni. They came from one of these. Check your spices too. I would toss all of it other than the spices but you can check it well stick it in the freezer to kill any beetles on the outside. I am sure someone else knows of a safe spray. Vac and spray your cupboards and counters. I heard bay leaves keep them away so stick a couple of bay leaves in your flour and cupboards. I would freeze your new flour for awhile until you are sure the beetles are gone. I have had them too - they don't hurt anything but are unappetizing. Good luck and get cleaning. Kathy

They are weevils, found in old flour. You should throw it away and get an air tight container to keep your flour in.

Or you could view the flour weevils as health giving protein & fibre or that extra crunch and eat them in with the bread or cakes. In some Eastern countries, it is even believed that eating weevils cures cancer, diabetis and AIDS!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weevil_%28beetle%29
