One of my Westies was exactly the same when a puppy. Made life very difficult if we went out for the day. On one occasion she held it in for 9 hours and then wet my mom's lap in the car on the way home!
The good news is they do grow out of it. Maybe it's to do with confidence and home being safer and more familiar. As a previous response suggested, praise your dog like mad when he does do it away from home (and he will eventually) and he'll get the idea. Probably took mine about 3 months - and that was while her brother was going anywhere and everywhere from the start.

Yes, my dog was the same when he was a pup. I think some people answering this question don't really understand what you're on about. What you want is for your dog to perform wherever you take him, whether it's in the garden or on a longer walk.
Just keep taking him out, and praising him to the skies when he performs outside. He'll get the hang of it eventually.
(And of course make sure you clean up after your dog - poop bags are cheap at any pet shop, and free at most Council offices - check with your local Council.)

You have trained him very well then! He must hold on so tight to do it in the garden where he thinks you want him to do it! Very Sweet.
It will only take one day to break this habit. Choose a day when its not raining... take him on his walk... stay on the walk until he can't hold it any longer and has to go. Make a huge fuss and give him a treat. When he realises that he gets praise for this, he'll relax. When he relaxes, he'll need to go again etc.
Keep up the praise and he'll soon be holding it for the walk instead of the garden.

Your dog is politically correct by nature. He knows the best way to tick off the neighbors and get yelled at is by making his messes where they aren't wanted. I suggest you install a garbage can in your garden for his turds and let him do it there.

That is absolutely fine. That means that he knows where he is supposed to go to the bathroom. Its better hten in the house. If he has a certain spot then he knows to go there. Don't yell at him. Just tell him good dog. But if you can tell that he needs to go to the bathroom then encouraged him to. Say Go potty or go pea. What ever works for you. Good luck.

Some people train thier dogs to do this! Saves having to pick up mess when outside. bit embarrassing in public sometimes. Although Im sure hell get used to it soon.

Good puppy! This means you get to finish your walk without toting a baggie full of warm, squishy poop.

When our's was a pup she did this too. An animal behaviourist assured us it was a territorial thing, and that she'd grow out of it. And she did. I know just how frustrating it can be.
