I would request a diaper, no way I would want a catheter.

The reason they use a catheter is so that they can monitor the AMOUNT of urine you put out compared to how much you fluid you take in and also to help prevent skin irritation or bed sore. Remember how easy it is for a baby to get diaper rash from sitting in a wet diaper? The same principle applies to adults. Since the surgery you are having is ankle surgery you may not need to have a catheter put in but talk to your surgeon about this.

If you are going to be under anesthesia for a while I doubt that the surgeon would agree to letting you use a diaper instead of a catheter. While more invasive a catheter is more sanitary and easier to maintain. You could always ask the surgeon or nursing staff during pre-op - you never know they may allow you to have the diaper if you want to avoid the catheter.

its up to the surgeon...if you are only to be under for a short time or local anesth, you can get by with emptying your bladder preop.

Why are you so obsessed with diapers? Did mommy leave you in dirty diapers when you were little and now you like it?

honest to god its not as bad as you think!
i have had to clean them, seen them put in and taken out. and i swore i would never have one. until i had to have a c-section and had to have one and trust me they are not bad.
the thought of one is worse than having one!
