Try Milkshape 3D - it's not free, but it's only about $25, I believe. It's also very powerful and a really good modelling tool. They give you a free demo for a month or so, and it's pretty awesome.

Yes, there is little difference between the requirements. The game rocks, I love running into my friends creatures, as well as my own. Good stuff, was worth the wait.
