I need to lose some weight, and I know decreasing the amount of mt. dew I drink will drastically help this. I would like to drink a diet soda WITH caffeine, but I have heard such terrible things about beverages with saccharine. Are there other alternatives?
I hate coffee and tea, so those won't work.

I don't like diet soda....but here's the skinny....

Saccharin
According to the Health Canada website, Saccharin, the first artificial sweetener developed, is currently not permitted to be added to foods due to results of studies completed in the 1970s that found it may be related to bladder cancer. But, it may appear as a table-top sweetener with point of sale warnings and labeling restrictions. In comparison to other artificial sweeteners, it’s not recommended for pregnant women.

Aspartame and Acesfulame-Potassium
When aspartame is broken down in the body, methanol is produced. Methanol is a type of alcohol which we know is neurotoxic and is suggested to be hundreds of times more potent than alcoholic beverages. Neurological disease and related symptoms can arise from consumption of aspartame including headaches, muscle spasms, dizziness, twitching, memory loss, migraines and even seizures. Surprisingly, aspartame has been found in high concentrations in patients with brain tumors. Aspartame is contraindicated for individuals suffering from phenylketonuria, a disease which prevents the proper metabolism of the amino acid phenylalanine. I also believe it is especially important to avoid aspartame during pregnancy because of its potential negative effects on the baby’s developing brain and nervous system.

Acesfulame-potassium was approved for use after the FDA reviewed more than 100 safety studies, including those to assess cancer risk. However, concerns around its safety exist as criticism has been raised against the reviewed studies and it has been suggested that it certainly does cause a higher incidence of cancer in animals.

Sucralose and Sugar Alcohols (Xylitol, Mannitol, etc.)
To date, these sweeteners, the newest to appear on the market, have good safety records and little report of adverse side effects, although eating too much sugar alcohol can cause gastro-intestinal upset and laxative effects. Mannitol and sorbitol are promoted for use in diabetics because they do not appear to cause significant changes in blood sugar levels. However, other sources report increased cravings, caloric intake, weight gain and insulin levels with higher amounts of these sweeteners in the diet. One benefit of sugar alcohols is less tooth decay because they are resistant to breakdown by the bacteria in our mouths. This is especially true for xylitol which can prevent tooth decay. Xylitol in high enough doses however has been shown to be poisonous to dogs.

Your Best Sweetener Options
Date paste, raisins, honey, apple sauce and stevia are excellent natural sweeteners. Stevia is available at most health food stores in liquid or powder form that can be easily added to drinks and foods. It’s very sweet so you only need a touch. Spices such as cinnamon, vanilla, or cocoa can also add flavor and sweetness to recipes.

As of right now, I don't think there are any diet soda's sweetened with Stevia....but you could always buy club soda and cola flavoring and sweeten it with Stevia. Kind of like an italian soda.

There is so no such thing as a healthy diet soda. But a good replacement, is carbonated water. it doesn't have caffeine, but it has some of the same effects as soda, and it has 0 calories!

No diet soda is healthy. I suggest you eliminate soda, coffee and other drinks which contain sugars. Drinking plenty of water daily will be your best option and your goal will be met much faster. If you must have some flavor, add lemons or a bit of lemon juice with your water.

Okay, last time. Most of the information circulating about diet drinks is unproven and constantly changing. For example, rumor's a few years ago said that aspartame gave you cancer, but now it eats holes in your brain. Studies have not been able to show any correlation. The newest is that diet soda actually makes you gain weight by conditioning your body to prefer sweet things, thus making you eat more sweets. Obviously, you are not super concerned about health as you consume regular mt. dew. Why not try diet mt. dew, which is both caffeinated and similar in taste?

Diet Rite (availability may depend on region) uses Splenda, and they now have a wide variety of flavors beyond cola.

While Splenda is new (and therefore research results are not yet available), it is made from sugar molecules. In fact, "overdosing" on Splenda may give you soft stools, meaning that it isn't absorbed into the system.

In defense of saccharin, it has been determined to be safe for human consumption after extensive, long-term research.

There´s no such thing as a healthy diet or light product, stay away from them.
Do your own natural lemonade with a little honey instead of sugar.

Probably 7up or Sprite, the lighter colored ones. They would be healthier than the darker colored ones, but water is always better. Have you ever tried Propel fitness water? It's great.
