You asked a really good question......very board but good.

A true Service dog, is one like a Seeing Eye dog, Handicapped assistance dog, etc. These dogs are highly trained by private groups and placed with disable people, so they can enjoy a fuller life.

For the typical pet owner, it's a TDI or Delta dog. These dogs are considered 'service dogs' but do not have full rights of true service dogs. There are many thingsTDI dogs can do like visit hospitals and nursing homes to brighten up the lives. Some companies have visits from TDI dogs to reduce workplace stress.

Your dog should go though advanced pet training classes before he is tested. You are looking for the CGC test with TDI requirements. The Therapy Dog International website will be of great help to you.

They testing is not all that hard, but there are dogs that still do not pass. TDI is 11 exercises. Accepting a stranger, sitting politely for petting, appearance and grooming, loose leash walking, walking in a crowd, sit and down on command/staying in place, come when called, reaction to another dog, reacting to distractions, supervised separation, say hello (that means your dog is easy to pet). None of these exercises are very difficult, you are not expected to perform these tasks to show ring quality. But you are expected to have a well bahaved pet.

I am more familiar with TDI. My dog that passed was a TDI dog.

Getting your CGC/TDI cert is kinda neat because it gives you a goal for your training. You may also want to check out the AKC website.......many people after the TDI testing move on to other types of training for other titles.

I am glad to see that you are interested in this.

Here is info about Seeing Eye dogs. I believe that most of these are started as puppies and trained from 8 weeks on. Hope this helps!

you could not you could not prepare a service canine or get it qualified as one. in basic terms service canine companies can prepare service canines. you have not something extra then an untrained puppy canine you attempt to illegally bypass off as a service canine. in case you have a incapacity then you definately could desire to bypass to a doctor and a therapist and be shown you have one then you definately can get a actual service canine from a company. quit attempting to bypass you puppy off as something its to. human beings such as you're making it extra good and extra good for people who elect actual service canines A canine won't make it extra handy to stand up and down stairs. Most agencies that breed true "service dogs" use their own stock and do not accept outside donations. I suspect that you are asking about in-hospital visits, etc.
