i just got a 6 1/2 week puppy half pitbull half german shepard...and he's already nipping quite a bit is he too young to understand for me to train him not to? he's pretty smart and already basically knows that outside is where he goes to the bathroom. everytime he nips. i hold his mouth shut and tap him on the nose and say no...but he just tries to nip me again right away...this wasnt the case with my other two dogs when they were puppies...they would stop nipping for a least a few minutes but they were older at the time. is there another technique i could try?

Squirt bottle will nip it right out of him. I also say ouch when the hurt me. Puppies should stay with mom till 8 weeks. Right now he is just starting to play and do a lot more and mom should be there to properly teach him not to bite.

Well he is 6 1/2 weeks old... he is only a puppy... and it sounds like a feisty little guy at that. Don't get discouraged. No he is not to young to start training him. Puppies have very short attention spans so do not get frustrated if he doesn't get it right away. You may want to act as if his nipping is hurting you. This should cause him to be submissive to you sense I am sure he knows your the dominant dog. Next time he nips at you just say OUCH! and act hurt. Worked with my Pit Bull.

No he is not to young to learn but this could be a way he's telling you he wants you play with him. When I had my 1/2 & 1/2 she was also somewhat rowdy. I got a rope toy and plenty of chewies ( like rawhide sticks ) and when she started her stuff, I would tell her NO BITE and give her one of her chewies or her rope. She also had a piece of that stuff like lambs wool she used as a security blanket and pull toy or what ever. As she got older she loved to play tug and she sometimes had a mind of her own. Oh one more thing, don't mean to sound bossy but watch tapping him on the nose, because of dogs extremely great sense of smell. Get a newspaper, roll it up and when he misbehaves get your paper slap it in you hand while also telling him NO, Make a loud sound with the paper. I went through several paper rolls with mine and be sure NOT to let him think of it as a toy. As mine got older, I got a paint stir stick and would make a very loud sound by slapping it on the counter while telling her NO! I called it the bop-stick and she finally got the message. Whenever i would say bop-stick she settled right down. I never hit her with it. Just be patient,be repetitive, try to use one word commands ( hint from puppy kindergarden) and he will be a great dog. Remember he is looking to you as his Mom now. You have to be consistent. Praise him when he does good and be stern when he's a stincker.

First - he is very young and could also be teething, so it might not be just nipping. Also, when puppies are taken away from their mom and siblings that young, they don't have the opportunity to learn from them. If they are doing the same behavior with the mother, she shows them it is not appropriate!

Make sure you have lots of good chewy toys around, like a Kong. As soon as your puppy nips you, loudly tell him NO! (no need to hit him on the nose, just startle him!) and give him something to chew on.

Puppies will be puppies and most puppies bite or nip when playing. Create a new more exciting game for your puppy.Pitbulls and shepherds both like things to play with---BALLS or LYLABONES work great. And your puppy is not to young to learn. As a matter of fact he is learining to do things you don't want him to do. PUPPIES are like blank computers if you don't load him with usefull information he will SPAM HIS OWN BRAIN full of worthless information.

Any puppy taken from their littermates before 8 weeks of age will be a biter like your puppy. Without that two week period from 6 weeks when they are weened to 8 weeks when they leave, they won't develop properly.
Just realized I have to leave for work. I'll edit this later tonight with the info I wanted to leave.

a rolled up news paper. don't hit him, smack it on a table or wall. the sound scares them. or clap really loud and say NO. grabbing his face might make him more aggressive.
