If you like to see a pretty sunset and in a somewhat fancy place go to the El Panorama restaurant. When your down along the boardwalk you can see the building the taller one about 1/2 ways up the hill...
I stayed at Hotel Rosita. Not so big but the people were nice and was water front. there are lots of little eating places to check out everywhere...

It is going to be hard for you to find local places due to the amount of American's that live there. They have Outback, Starbucks, Chiles, Pizza hut...You can't get away from it.
There is a nice "Real Mexican Taco Bell" place at the Engracia Tequila factory. You can also buy great tequila there. Also Senor Frogs is local, but kind of just like an American place.

The little taco carts can be good, but beware not all are sanitary, my favorite was tacos Mendoza, its next to the Farmacia la Guadalajara which is open 24 hours, as far as restaurants go i often ate at the Molina De Agua... it is a hotel with a couple restaurants and you can have your dinner right on the beach. they have good food, good service, and they have a pool by the beach open to everyone, their bathrooms are clean and free....a good hint to quality food is to watch the locals, eating where they eat, also ask one of English speaking locals where they would go to eat on a special occasion..

there is a mexican resturant called mi casa that is really really good. They apparently have 2 of them. The food at our hotel (grand valeas) was off the hook, so it was the only resturant we ended up eating at, but they were really good.
