if you know one, you can usually find out the other except that, as gardening girl points out, common names can vary a lot from place to place but every species can only have one scientific name. If you know a local name and have access to a flora or some listing of plants, you may be able to come up with the scientific name.

The alternative is to ask a scientific professional (perhaps at your local college) or, if it is a plant that is grown in gardens, a horticulturalist/nurseryperson.
