When and how did just sticking up one finger up on your hand become such an obscene act? I was watching what Michael Vick did, and I got curious as to how this evolved. How did the middle finger get to represent that?

in old england archers use thier middle finger to draw back the bow string when they were caught in battle thier middle finger was cut off. in an act of defiance they wold show thier middle finger to prove to the enemy they were true archers.

See- I always thought it came about because when you do it, the 2 surrounding fingers form "nuts" and the middle finger forms...welll....you know. Don't wanna get my answer deleted! But honestly, I always thought that that was why we did it...hmmmm
