I have misplaced my dd form 214, I have been out of the military for 13 years. How do I get a copy of it? I have been to a local recruiters office and they are clueless.

To obtain a copy of your military record, please visit the web site for the Military Personnel Records Center (MPRC) in St. Louis, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration:
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/.
This site gives instructions to submit a SF 180 - Request Pertaining to Military Records.

The MPRC also offers a new on-line document request service. You can request your DD 214 through this web site:
http://www.archives.gov/veterans/evetrecs/index.html .
Our experience is that the time it now takes to receive the copies has been very much improved.

You can request a copy through the National Archives using the links provided in previous answers. However do not file your DD-214 at your county records office. This makes it a public document and an easy target for identity thieves.

You need to request a replacement through the National Archives. They have an online request form at the link below.

Contact the Veterans' Administration using this form:

They will get it sent to you!

And when you do get a replacement, make sure you go down to your county offices and file it with the clerk, and keep copies for yourself (in safe-deposit box, too, if you have one). Then it will always be available.
