I am already in counseling and on anti depressants, but still can't seem to get over certain things that have happened in the past...I guess you could almost call them flashbacks, but they also come in the form of nightmares and I get very paranoid. Especially around males. My boyfriend knows about this problem and is there for me, but he is the only male I feel comfortable around (besides family). I have been known to cut, and other destructive behaviors, but I can't seem to fill my counselor in on these details. I don't want to end up in a mental hospital! Especially since the point of me cutting is not to kill myself...I don't know what to do. I am 20 yeasr old, and have been fighting depression since my freshman year of high school. There are periods when I am perfectly fine and happy, but when I get low its bad... I just want to know what true happiness feels like again...Its been so long....

I have someone in my life that cuts. We have tried everything to get her committed as she wants to be. But they will not do it because she is not suicidal. You need to tell your therapist. You wont be put in dont worry.
Post traumatic stress syndrome is a hard one to deal with, i have that and depression and panic attacks. It seems to lessen as the years go by.
Try to get your mind on other things. When it gets to be too much get a notebook and write all your feelings out. It helps a lot. Get a hobby you can really get into. Find some books you enjoy reading , this will make you just think of what you are reading and give your mind a rest.
And last but not least, give God a chance. Find a bible believing church. I dont suggest any that are the word of faith types like on tv but more conservative solid churches.
I will pray for you.

It sounds like your suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). It sometimes takes you to tell your counselor the anti-depressants are not doing the trick and they will change your meds or combine you with another medication to take when your are feeling the flash-backs. I know sometimes it takes switching medications to find the one that is right for you and you will know because your body will respond with you feeling a lot better. Don't give up but be up front with your counselor that the medicine your taking is not doing enough for you. Depression is very curable and you desire to feel happiness again. Talk to your parents if you can and tell them also...

I to suffer from depression and Post traumatic stress disorder. You to probably have PTSD as well. One sure sign of PTSD is flashbacks of the traumatic events. My advice to you is not to keep anything from your therapist. Tell her/him you cut yourself. I did and they didn't send me to a hospital. Everything you tell them is supposed to be kept confidential. It is their job to help you deal with your depression in a better way. I understand how you feel though. You need to feel the physical pain to escape the emotional pain. Maybe instead of cutting you could exercise. It is the physical exertion which always helps me. It also increases your endorphin levels which can help you feel happier. My PTSD has created a chemical imbalance in my brain and resulted in me now being bipolar. This may have happened to you as well. You really need to talk to your doctor about these things, tell them everything, don't keep secrets, they are there to help you, not hurt you.

That's the problem right there. You can't let go because you really DON'T want to let go. If you did, you would do whatever it takes...especially telling your counselor.
If you can't do that, then you are doomed to this pain for the rest of your life. Trust me....the boyfriend won't put up with that for long, either.

you need to tell your counsellor about the things that happened in your past and what you are doing now. they can't help you unless you are truthful. flashbacks and nightmares can be a sign of post traumatic stress disorder and there is help for that. good luck

You can find peace, joy, and hope in Jesus Christ who loves us so much that He died for us on the cruel Cross.
In the Beginning God created heavens and earth.
God gives you air to breathe and sunshine to enjoy.
God gives you water to drink and food to eat.
God gives you a wonderful body and sound mind, to live.
God loves you, and you are precious to Him.
Son of God died on the Cross to save us from condemnation.
Jesus’ love is boundless and everlasting.
We have the hope of Heaven through Jesus.
Life therefore has fantastic and glorious future!
(Digestion of above can even prevent depression and suicidal thoughts.)

Firstly you need to be completely honest with your therapist, if you feel that the environment is not suitable to, then find yourself another therapist ASAP.
Health care professions can only provide treatment on the information they have, not being completely open is only hindering your treatment.

YOur therapist can't help you if you aren't completely honest with them.
If you are in therapy and on medication, they will most likely NOT hospitalize you. But you need to be truthful and tell them everything. if not you are wasting their time and your time and you aren't getting the help you need.

You need to be honest with your doctors so that they can help you. If you need something more intensive let them know, you are not doing yourself any favors by not letting them know, because you are left to suffer while there may be something they can do to help you.
