I'm currently thinking about a fun date wothout having to fall into the generic routine of a dinner and a movie kind of thing. Any ideas anyone?

What about getting outside and doing something? I don't know where you live, but in Ohio - there are tons of Christmas/holiday things going on every weekend - craft shows, Santa visits, horse/carriage rides, etc.
Google your city and see if there are any e-zines that send out weekly happenings - I find there are usually great ideas inside them - and well worth the effort to get out of that dinner/movie routine!

Picnic. If it's too cold for a picnic, make it an indoor picnic. It'll be cute and romantic.
Live theater.
Art museum.
Comedy club.
Go dancing or take dance lessons together.
Take a cooking class together or find some other class that would be fun for both of you.
Horseback riding.
Go do something silly: hit the children's museum or go to a puppet show.
Look in your local newspaper in the "what's happening this weekend" section and find something neither of you have ever done.
Have a "Murder Mystery" party. Visit your local games store like Games by James to buy the game. They're fun.
Build a puzzle.
Have a camp fire and roast marshmallows.

if you are age appropriate...try going to a winery. they give you samples of different wines to try. that will help start the date off relaxed. then you could go bowling or something like that? rollerskating? not sure if it's warm where you are at, but renting a jet ski is a blast. ride together for some closeness.

Don't date - court. Dating sets you up for divorce. Why? That's a big question too. But look up courting vs. dating and you'll see that there is a purpose in courting where as dating is random acts of rejection!
