A matching grant or scholarship or gift or whatever you want to call it is just that, a match. Some person or institution gives an amount equal to what someone else has given or equal to some defined total amount. For example, if you are trying to raise money for AIDs marathon, I can promise to match whatever Person A gives you or the total or what the first 5 people give you or whatever.
