Don't forget all the Yanks (they say "Jeez", but not the others), Brits (who favour "Bloody Christ", "Bleedin' Christ" and so on)!

According to the Ten Commandments, if you believe in them (i don't), then yes, those uses of Jesus' name would be "Taking the Lord's name in vain", which is a "sin".

However, there are mortal and venial sins. Only the mortal ones send you "Straight to hell, boy", like the Clash said. I'm not sure, also, if only Catholics believe in that distinction, but at any rate, I don't think THAT sin is mortal. (Missing Mass IS, however).

Addendum: Here is some definition of sin, and yes mortal sin IS a Catholic concept: "The concepts of mortal and venial sin are essentially Roman Catholic. Evangelical Christians and Protestants may or may not be familiar with these terms. Walter Ewell, in The Concise Evangelical Dictionary of Theology (Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Michigan, 1991, page 469) gives the following definitions: Mortal Sin is “sin causing spiritual death.” and Venial Sin is “sin that can be forgiven.”. Under the definition of venial sin, Elwell elaborates, “…venial sin is invariably used in contrast with mortal sin. Mortal sins are those sins that exclude people from the kingdom; venial sins are those sins that do not exclude people from it. Venial sin differs from mortal sin in the punishment it entails. Venial sin merits temporal punishment expiated by confession or by the fires of purgatory, while mortal sin merits eternal death.”(1)

Regarding swearing, "In summary, mortal sin is an intentional violation of the Ten Commandments (in thought, word or deed) committed in full knowledge of the gravity of the matter and it results in the loss of salvation. Salvation may be regained through repentance and God’s forgiveness. Venial sin may be a violation of the Ten Commandments or a sin of a lesser nature, but it is committed unintentionally and/or without full consent. Although damaging to one’s relationship with God, venial sin does not result in loss of eternal life."(1)

So, if you swear INTENTIONALLY (which almost everyone does), then I guess it WOULD be a mortal sin! Uh-oh!

YES!!! It's using the Lords name in vain and for Christians that is a sin! So yes if all these guys or girls doing it are Christians then they are sinning and if they don't stop it and if they don't repent for doing it in the past then they are most certainly going to HELL as far as Christianity is concerned that is! But I think a lot of people are going to Hell, if it is not for that reason then there are lots of other things Christians are not supposed to do because they are sins so they are all going to Hell as well. Go figure!!!
Just my thoughts on it. *hugs* JAC< in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

It's not about Australian men or any other group of people. It's about fearing the Lord, respect, honoring Him, and grieving NOT The Holy Spirit. But actually, it all comes down to this: Are those 90% Aussie men (or any group) who are doing this Christians? I mean, are these a group of people who REALLY love the Lord every moment and have given their lives over to Him? If they were, The Holy Spirit would deal with them and because of their love for Him, they would stop saying these things. My guess is that this group of people are not living for Him in that manner. I hope this helps. PEACE!!!

Well if you believe that Jesus Christ is God, yes it is a sin because the Seventh Commandment says: "You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not acquit anyone who misuses his name." Another version is: "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain."

However, if you belong to a sect that doesn't believe Christ was/is God, that he was only a man, the son of God (like the Arians believed before the early Catholics wiped them out) then it would not be a sin.

If what you are saying it for has a purpose then its not actually taking the lords name in vain. therefore it is not a sin.

only those who do not fully understand the concept of reading would be able to find anything saying otherwise.

(if there is a hell though then most austrailians would be going there as they are meant to be the decendants of criminals and most likely within the seven generations. This means that they are damned anway - Bad luck for Bruce and Sheila)

It would probably be considered as taking God's name in vain, so I doubt He would be terribly thrilled about it. But condemning a man to eternal torment seems a bit harsh. I think God is cool at the end of the day.

Yes, it is a sin, it's taking the Lord's Name in vain, as for them going to hell, that is for the Lord to decide, not anyone else. Good Luck!!!!

People don't realize what "Taking the Lord's name in vain" means.

It has nothing to do with swearing.

It means committing selfish or "unholy" acts and using your God as authority to do so.

It's not just Australian men, believe me. And yes, using the Lord's name in vain (swearing) is a sin.

If it is a sin, Just name it to God and he is just and righteous to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Who said that you go to hell for sinning? I was one of the greatest haters of God that I know of. He forgives everything.
